You can turn it off, in both Vista and XP. I actually completely removed it in XP, using nLite.

Hmm... i see ms desktop search as quite sophisticated program. Sure, it sucks for a few first hours until it finished indexing, but the wait seems worth superb searching experience it provides. IMHO
