PC World's senior editor, Mark Hachman, managed to corner an important Team Blue staffer during this week's Innovation 2023 event, where Core Ultra "Meteor Lake" processors were presented in an official manner. This CPU family is set to arrive on December 14, but starting out only in mobile form—past leaks have yoyo-ed between rumored plans for desktop variants being alive or getting canned entirely. Michelle Johnston Holthaus—executive vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group at Intel Corporation—confirmed to PC World in a video interview that Meteor Lake desktop SKUs are scheduled for launch next year. She elaborated on this slightly surprising declaration: "I want one processor family top to bottom for both segments, doesn't everybody?"

Exact details regarding release timings were not disclosed, but previous leaks have indicated that the rest of Intel's 14th Gen Core/Raptor Lake Refresh desktop lineup is due in early 2024—a product launch of 65 W TDP-rated SKUs could coincide with CES 2024. A "Meteor Lake-S" desktop CPU series is speculated to be placed mid-year, while the Arrow Lake generation is believed to be slated for late 2024. Reports have suggested that Meteor Lake has been delayed numerous times due to developmental setbacks—a leaked presentation slide seemed to show MTL-S SKUs (on socket LGA1851) being limited to 35 and 65 W TDPs, thus restricting the range to Core i3 and i5 product lines. Intel's new naming scheme—for the Meteor Lake generation—will assign "Core Ultra 5" instead of "Core i5" if new models land in the "Premium" processor bracket. We are not entirely sure where the future equivalent to "Core i3" will stick in the lower-end hierarchy, but the revised naming system suggests that it will only exist within Intel's "Mainstream" tier—so just a plain "Core 3," without any mention of Ultra performance or feature set.

At Intel Innovation 2023, PC World's Mark Hachman asked Michelle Johnston Holthaus, Executive Vice President & General Manager of Client Computing Group at Intel, how Meteor Lake will change things going forward for the company and what it means for future CPU releases.

Michelle Johnston Holthaus answered some key questions: said:
Q: Let me ask you, is there gonna be a Meteor Lake desktop?
A: Desktop will come in 2024.

Q: So you are confirming Meteor Lake desktop?
A: Yes.

Q: Whether or not you guys are returning to an era where there's gonna be a processor family for mobile and a separate processor family for desktop, but it doesn't sound like that's the case.
A: That is not the case. I want one processor family top to bottom for both segments, doesn't everybody?

First on Intel 4... Right, as if they'd let one of their foundry customers beat them to it...

let me get this straight... raptor lake refresh comes out early 2024, meteor lake desktop mid 2024, and arrow lake late 2024...

wtf... so many desktop cpu's in 1 year, that sounds dumb as hell. i mean even from a business standpoint it sounds dumb as hell... what are they doing? lol

It seems like a very strange and optimistic release order to me, what's the point of launching 3 Desktop architectures within a year? From what has been presented so far, it seems to me that ML is quite complex and expensive for now, so it will take time to ramp up and reach the desktop.

Ultrabooks should be Intel's initial target and it will reach desktops at the end of next year. My bet

Most possibly they will dump the worst of the binning to a few OEM Desktop or Workstation or AIO models to reduce the financial loss from the R&D of ML since it resulted in being a failure from what they expected, forcing them to refresh the same arch AL had for the 2nd time with the upcoming14th gen.

The only interesting thing about ML is the XP2 iGPU. 128eus on Xe2 HP cores is gonna be neat for integrated and may be twice as fast as current 96 eu iGPUs. It would be the kick in the pants we need for AMD to move past 12 CUS.

Meteor Lake on mobile platforms will be launched December 14th this year. One of the issues for Intel is how it can provide enterprise customers with Neural Processing Unit (NPU) hardware on desktop platforms before Arrow Lake launches which is likely to be late 2024/early 2025. OEMs are already manufacturing socket LGA-1700 desktop based hardware. Socket LGA-1700 is actually a dual LGA-17xx/LGA-18xx socket. So a Meteor Lake (ML) desktop using socket LGA-1851 like Arrow Lake is not that difficult. Cooler compatibility is effectively 100% (Arrow Lake IHS is 0.1mm higher but within tolerances for existing coolers). Change the Alder Lake/Raptor Lake chipset to a desktop ML chipset and the lower power consumption of ML will fit in nicely with the minimal PSUs of the typical enterprise OEM machine. And for enterprises power consumption is an issue.

There will be an overlap with Raptor Lake refresh but then there will still be competing Alder Lake and non-refreshed Raptor Lake parts on sale at the same time. So pay your money and take your choice...

It looks like their intended schedule went FUBAR.
Intel release a new/refreshed desktop CPU range every year, so 14th gen refresh K parts November 2023 and non-K/i3/i5 parts in February 2024 is on schedule. Arrow Lake a year later in November 2024 and early 2025 is on schedule. The Meteor Lake desktop parts are a new thing that seem to be primarily targeted at the OEM/enterprise market to allow them an earlier than Arrow Lake investment in AI capable desktop hardware with a potential bonus of significantly lower power consumption. I would expect that some of the Intel technologies such as Intel Dynamic Tuning Technology previously confined to mobile hardware will be deployed on Meteor Lake desktop, and could also be deployed for 14th gen refresh CPUs through BIOS and driver updates on existing 12th/13th gen motherboards.

Bet it's just the standard mobile chip on a different substrate, like Broadwell 2.0.

Yup, that would make sense. And would be perfectly OK for OEMs looking to bring the AI and reduced power consumption of Meteor Lake to the desktop as soon as mid next year.

Arrow Lake is the real high performance desktop part, Lunar Lake is the mobile centric follow up to Meteor Lake, not Arrow Lake. Meteor Lake S at best will be i3 and i5 equivalent parts, Raptor Lake i7 and i9 will carry desktop performance flag until Arrow Lake S hits the desktop late next year. Panther Lake is Arrow Lake's successor in 2025.

this makes sense then yeah. well my days of seeing 90+ celsius on the CPU during gaming are over, so mobile variants can eat shit.

*hugs my 55 celsius max temp in ultra 1440p god of war*

Can somebody confirm if intel 4 = 7nm tsmc?
It is difficult to describe a node only by size, but let's say it is Intel's 7nm with density close to TSMC's 4nm. Real life chips will show if this is correct.

Except TSMC 7nm has been shipping and being mass produced for five years. Intel 4 is being used where? Nowhere. Yet.
So congratulations to Intel managing to start shipping TSMC 7nm equivalent five years later i guess...
Intel 4 is purportedly similar in density at the transistor level to TSMC 4, not to 7, I believe you're a bit confused there. Intel's 10nm tech which has been refined is labeled Intel 7, as it delivers same density as TSMC 7nm, the actual physical envelope stopped being a benchmark for them a bit ago when they restructured the processes naming scheme, it might be physically 7nm but if its characteristics are akin to the competitor's 4nm, that's the comparison.

Even if that's true then TSMC has been mass producing 4nm for a year now. If Intel starts producing their Intel 4 in 2024 (and that's a pretty big if) then they are still at least ~1,5 years behind TSMC. Well the good news is that they're at least trying. Otherwise there would a monopoly on cutting edge nodes and that's bad in terms of prices for consumers.

It seems to me Meteor Lake desktop will come late 2024 along with Arrow Lake desktop and i5 K/KF series and above will be Arrow Lake based and Meteor Lake will be used for i5 non-K parts and below (similar situation with what we have now in 13th gen with Raptor and Alder Lake segmentation)

Rest of 14th gen. Key K CPUs are due very soon. These CPUs are coming out in a few weeks, along with the Z790 gen2 boards which are already in the hands of media (hi). Its gonna happen before October ends.

3 minute mark, Intel copying me with their changes. :)

Putting things on e-cores as much as possible, then p-cores for interactive stuff.

Yep its getting pretty ridiculous, someone out there is driving this rapid release nonsense, probably shareholders.
