Today, AMD announced the much-anticipated AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors and reintroduced the Threadripper processor lineup to the high-end desktop space with the Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series processors, setting a new standard for computing performance and innovation in the industry.

AMD is introducing the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors, which will be available later this year to DIY customers, SI partners, and through OEM partners, including Dell Technologies, HP, and Lenovo. Designed for professionals and businesses that demand top-tier performance, reliability, expandability, and security, these processors provide the unparalleled multi-core performance of "Zen 4" Threadripper 7000 Series processors. Simultaneously, AMD is also introducing the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series processors, returning to the HEDT environment for the first time since 2020. AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO Processors
The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors expand on the prior generation's unrivaled performance and superior platform features for the workstation market. Built on the leading 5 nm "Zen 4" architecture, this generation dominates the competition in demanding professional applications and complex multitasking workloads, such as Revit model creation.

For multithreaded workloads, Threadripper PRO processors offer up to 96 cores and 192 threads, the most cores of any workstation processor for complex simulation, generative design, rendering, and software compilation tasks, where users can see up to two times faster performance in tools like Chaos V-Ray. Saw some site mentioning Pro cpus can be used on TRX50 boards but non Pro arent compatible with WRX90. Also name difference led to belive both Pro and non Pro are on different sockets.
AMD's own slides strictly mention that they both are on sTR5 and that TR PRO is compatible with both chipsets.

The non pro motherboards can accept the threadripper-pro CPUs
But the pro boards will not work with non-pro threadrippers.

So does this mean that TRX50 boards will have at least 8 DIMM slots but only 4 will work on HEDT chips?
No, but the max theoretical bandwidth will be halved.

I hope I can afford the non-pro Threadripper, maybe the 24 core version! :toast:

Why do you need the pro model?
I would be really happy with the 7960X for 4 years
Even if only had 48 PCIe v4 lanes would be adequate
48 v5 + 32 v4 lanes should be more than enough!

The prices are crazy, as HEDP-s always were, You buy these platforms for long term use.
So you can save up more until the next "investment"
I bought my Ryzen 3950X for $910, received it 4 days before the official release day, about 1430 days, that is $0.6 for each day.
For the Threadripper 7960X it would be about one Dollar/day.

Given that 24c/48t 7960X is $1,000 less than the 32c/64t 7970X, a hypothetical 16c/32t 7950X could land at ~$1,200, and 12c/24t 7940X at under $1k. That would still be horrendously overpriced, but also low enough to make me seriously consider a sTR5 system.

C'mon AMD, throw us prosumers a fricking bone here, don't artificially limit the low-end TR 7000s to the PRO range. I'm absolutely not buying AM5 in its current IO-crippled form - either pull the finger out and do a platform refresh there that isn't arse, or make cheap-ish Threadrippers available. Don't make me buy second-hand, again.

Wish they'd provided a block diagram for HEDT too - I wonder how those 48 lanes will be allocated vs PRO's 128. Assuming it'll be two x16 5.0 and an x8 5.0, with the remaining 8 (still, sigh) reserved for NVMe. Hopefully some of the 4.0 lanes will become available for extra PCIe slots.

With that TDP, it's pretty much on par with 14900K.
Look at the core and thread count, and cache size. These CPUs are playing in an entirely different ballpark to Intel's "14th generation" garbage.

- x16 gen 5 slot (CPU)
- x16 gen 5 slot (CPU)
- x4 m.2 x4 gen 5 (CPU)
- x4 gen 5 -> 4x (or 8x) SATA
- x4 gen 5 -> 4x (or 8x) SATA
- x4 gen 5 to chipset
From chipset ->32 x gen 4
- x16 gen 4 slot (from chipset)
- x16 gen 4 to spare for additional motherboard PCIe slots or for other connectors (1G/2,5G/10G ethernet, gen4 m.2, USB 2/3/4 connectors etc).

No way anyone is gonna waste 5.0 lanes on SATA! Those SATA-designated lanes on the WRX90 diagram are almost certainly 3.0 ones that exist purely for that purpose - consumer Zen 4 does the exact same thing. So I reckon those eight remaining 5.0 lanes from the CPU could be used for two more NVMes, giving four 5.0 NVMe drives off the CPU (which is nucking futs) - meaning none of the chipset lanes would need to be allocated to NVMe, so as you say will allow possibly a 4.0 x16 slot with multiple peripheral functionality.

First, I'm hoping they don't kill consumer TR this time.

Second, I'm really hoping for an 8c or 16c TR option, bonus if it has a strong iGPU included using all that extra space. I need the lanes more than a high-end CPU in order to upgrade an old home media server, but if I can have it also replace an old emulator/light gaming rig in parallel, that'd be a bonus.
