The GeForce RTX 3050 has been around since January 2022, and formed the entry level of the company's RTX 30-series. It had its moment under the Sun during the crypto GPU shortage as a 1080p gaming option that sold around the $300 mark. With the advent of the RTX 40-series, NVIDIA is finding itself lacking an entry-level discrete GPU that it can push in high volumes. Enter the RTX 3050 6 GB. Cut down from the original RTX 3050, this SKU has 6 GB of memory across a narrower 96-bit GDDR6 memory interface, and fewer shaders. Based on the tiny GA107 "Ampere" silicon, it gets 2,048 CUDA cores compared to the 2,560 of the RTX 3050, a core-configuration NVIDIA refers to as the GA107-325. The card has a tiny typical graphics power (TGP) of just 70 W, and so we should see graphics cards without additional power connectors. The company plans to give the RTX 3050 6 GB a formal retail channel launch in February 2024, at a starting price of $179.

Thanks no thanks. Wake me up when entry level nVidia GPUs get actual entry level prices.

Right now AMD doesn't have a similar new video card to compete in that price range.

Does this mean any 4000 series below the 4060 is not happening?

With the RX 6600 going for $200 or less, this should be priced at $149 unless they change the specs to use the full AD107 die with a normal complement of 8 GB of RAM.

It's not similar. It's much faster and much hungrier. You can technically undervolt and underclock it to 70 W mean wattage but I'm not sure the majority of users is gonna do it.

What are you talking about? These GPUs consume almost the same amount, and in my opinion, consumers in this price range will only consider price and performance.

Meh. The only positive part of this card, is the 70 watt tgp. Making it a a slot powered card only possible.

Else its all bad. Rtx 3050 8 gb is all ready not a powerful card and then make a all ready slow card worse. Thats all ready a DOA card in my opinion.

Then its also based on older generation gpu. Another thumbs down from me. Only 6 gb vram is also a dead end. I could continue with this.

Give us at least something that is worth actually spending money on. Rtx 4050 8 gb with a tgp of 75 watt. Yes please.

The news clearly indicates the "new" 3050 will consume 70 Watts. It almost halves the consumption of RX 6600.
So will deliver maybe 2/3 of the performance? Similar to a 1650 Super with more VRAM and features.

This is the real answer except it would be ~$230.

Let's see...

1703005178497.png

The "new" 3050 will be cut-down to 80% of SMs and to 75% of VRAM (not sure about clocks but if they don't change the VRAM clock it will be 75%). At the same time, the GPU also gets limited to 70 W instead of 130 W. That would be a GPU failing to outperform an RX 580 (which is $40 on the aftermarket, mind me). It's about 60% of RX 6600 raster performance. At best.

I thought RX 6500 XT was the most super dead GPU ever. Not for long.

It has the same configuration as the laptop RTX 3050, but a narrower memory bus still. It should perform okay for e-Sports, but $179 is a bit steep for that, IMO. Either way, its performance is actually pretty decent, I'm just unsure about lowering memory bandwidth even further to meet that 6 GB target. They should have released this as a 8 GB, 128-bit model, just like the mobile 3050 and called it a RTX 3030 or something.

Funny, I didn't see anyone calling the 4 GB, 64-bit 6500 XT a scam

Are we living on the same planet? As far as I'm aware, the 6500 XT was/is widely derided for missing AV1 decode and a HW encoder entirely and not moving performance forward at its price tier relative to the RX580/RX5500.

If this was a 4050 6 GB, it would at least be good for AV1 encoding. But this is just completely useless.

I don't seem to recall AMD being called out on running an extortion racket (lol), nor the abundance of memes as to why "AMD is so blatantly evil" because they wanted to release a (even more substandard than usual) entry level product built off a design that was primarily intended for laptops. Even the limitation regarding only two displays simultaneously and lack of an encoder were initially justified that they were intended to be paired with a Cezanne or Rembrandt APU that supported these encoding features. The GA107 has the same positioning - and many of the same issues - of the Navi 24, except that it does have a competent encoder chip.

If this was a 4050 6 GB, it would at least be good for AV1 encoding. But this is just completely useless.

The truth is, it will sell well to the slot-power GPU niche as with this, they are offering a superior product with fewer compromises when compared to the RX 6400, as well as third world markets. With this card they are retiring the GTX 16 series entirely, positioning this where the GTX 1630 once stood and replacing the 1650 with the 8 GB 3050. Of course, prices won't follow... but as long as they're uncontested, they don't really have to I suppose...
