Intel's entry-level 14th Gen Core desktop processor, the Core i3-14100, got its first retailer listing, with ShopBLT putting it up for $150.24. The 4-core/8-thread chip that only has performance cores (P-cores), is based on the same H0 silicon that drives the Core i5-12600, which physically lacks E-cores. Intel has been reusing its "Alder Lake" silicon across the non-K variants of its 13th Gen and now 14th Gen Core i3 and Core i5 processor SKUs. One way to spot them is by the size of their dedicated L2 caches for the P-cores, which is 1.25 MB, compared to 2 MB on the 8P+16E "Raptor Lake-S" silicon used to carve out Core i7 and Core i9 SKUs across the 13th Gen and 14th Gen.

The Core i3-14100 offers a tiny speed bump over its predecessor, the i3-13100. With the base frequency set at 3.50 GHz, and boost frequency probably at 4.70 GHz, compared to the 3.40 GHz and 4.50 GHz of the i3-13100. Each of the four P-cores has 1.25 MB of L2 cache, and they share 12 MB of L3 cache. The chip gets the same I/O as the rest of the lineup, with a dual-channel DDR4/DDR5 memory interface, and PCIe connectivity that includes a Gen 5 x16, a CPU-attached Gen 4 x4 for NVMe slots, and a DMI 4.0 x8 chipset bus. The iGPU on offer is the UHD Graphics 730 based on Xe-LP, with 24 EU, compared to the 32 that's standard with higher 14th Gen Core desktop processor models. The chip has a processor base power of 60 W, and a possible maximum turbo power of 110 W. Intel is expected to announce its locked 14th Gen Core desktop processor lineup in January 2024, which should include the i3-14100, and its cheaper sibling, the i3-14100F, which lacks integrated graphics.

Performance difference 12100 to 14100 is more of "++" especially in multicore. Maybe like "+++".
Yeah but it's still Alder Lake cores, not Raptor Lake cores, so doesn't deserve a 4 in the name. I think a 10% clockspeed bump and 11-14% performance bump is not worthy of an extra +. If they had used updated Raptor cores for sure.

WE WANT i3 WITH 6 CORES!!! dammit it's been sooooooo long..

Yeah if it was 6 cores like the 'first?' leaks assumed then this would be my drop in upgrade from my 12100 but like this I will just pick up a second hand i5 sometime next year and call it a day.

The quad core models 12100, 13100 and now 14100 imho are actually blazing fast when i compare their stats to my 3770 (which at time was sold as an i7).
To upskill my knowledge a bit i would appreciate it if someone could explain me how it is possible these 12th gen onwards quad chips are able to achieve such high
framerates above 100 with above 100 lows fps and not that much differ from a hexacore, is my thinking somehow logical in this sense that:

every p core of the quad (has only p no e core) has a relative high clock speed, despite its only 8 threads is able to finish the qeue of instructions given by a game to process sufficient enough
that actually a hexacore is not needed. Only if you need 144fps with 1440p onwards with games you are in need of every advantage in cpu power to achieve this

There is one game in my steam lib which should benefit from a octacore which is darktide. But after long searching even that game runs smooth say above 75fps (again not aiming for high end monitors people who need 100fps 100hz 120 or 144)
This 14100 very well could become my next chip of choice, it will be a thrill to operate it and promise an interesting journey. If anyone could answer following thought would also be cool,
when viewing the intel gpu roadmap, am i correct the 14th gen takes advantage of better tech vs 13th gen with new battlemage gpus in ai sense, eg translate in better gpu performance?

14th gen and 13th gen are exactly the same, for the most part. There is no igpu difference -- the CORE ULTRA on laptops has the new igpu.

They can execute threads fast enough that you don't need the additional cores.

Cores are just extenders of computational power, when a core can only go so fast, the only way to increase throughput is to add another core. If you have a core that's fast enough, you don't need the additional cores. The alder lake/raptor lake IPC is very strong and also they're relatively high clocked, so that's why the 4 cores can hang with the 6 core chips.

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.
13500 needs some love. 6P+8E is great for a $250 chip. A 200MHz clock bump to 5GHz wouldn't hurt...

This doesn't really seem like news. The 13100 is pretty much the same product and is $148. The 13100F is $124, and it's the same as the 13100 but without the iGPU. And the 12100 is $119 and the 12100F $99, and again those are nearly the same product. (Everything from the 12100F to the 14100 use 4 Golden Cove CPU cores built on Intel 7 and the only thing separating them is clock frequency.)

The 12100, 13100, and 14100 all have 5MB of total L2 cache, or 1.25MB/core. What separates them is frequency, with 3.3GHz, 3.4GHz, and 3.5GHz respective base clock speeds, and 4.3GHz, 4.5GHz, and 4.7GHz respective boost clocks.

Woo, more Alder Lake. On the upside, if it's like the 12100F and 13100F before it, the 14100F be priced attractively at least, despite not being an actual new product.

The AMD competition at this price point is the 5500 and 5600G...not very strong.

why buy an i3 for 179 when you can get a ryzen 5 that's way better for 177 to 209 6c12t
