SilverStone Intros Extreme1200R Platinum, an SFX-L PSU with 12V-2x6 Connector

SilverStone today introduced what is possibly the highest Wattage PSU in the SFX-L form-factor, the Extreme1200R Platinum. This contemporary PSU meets SFX12V 4.1 specification, which is comparable to ATX 3.1, along with PCIe CEM 5. It includes a native 12V-2x6 power connector capable of 600 W continuous power delivery and excursions within the PCIe Gen 5 spec. 12V-2x6 is a successor to 12VHPWR, and is designed to be less flimsy and prone to burn-outs than 12VHPWR, from improper connector coupling or cable bending.

The SilverStone Extreme1200R Platinum delivers 1200 W using a single 100 A +12 V rail, with Cybenetics Platinum rated switching efficiency. It comes with an all Japanese capacitor design, with most common electrical protections, against over/under voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit. A 120 mm fluid dynamic bearing fan is used to keep cool. Connectors include a 24-pin ATX, two 4+4 pin EPS, a 600 W 12V-2x6, four 6+2 pin PCIe, eight SATA power, three 4-pin Molex, and a Berg. The company didn't reveal pricing.

I just purchased the 850R version for an ITX build. Since this build will take place over time. I want to insert his PSU over the 850R. I like all the updated power connections.

Our 12VHPWR connectors didn't have any reported melting issues before so this new connector definitely shouldn't either!

As shown in the mechanical drawing you posted of the Extreme 1200R Platinum above and in the specifications section of its product page, the dimensions for this power supply is considered "SFX-L" at 125mm (4.92") wide x 63.5mm (2.5") high x 130mm (5.12") deep. Your current Extreme 850R Platinum is a standard "SFX" with measurements oft 125mm (4.92") wide x 63.5mm (2.5") high x 100mm (3.94") deep.

I've always found Silverstone products decent. However, price and availability (at least here in Canada) isn't always as good as other competitors offerings.

Do you have any plans to release an SFX12V 4.1 SFX (not L) PSU with at least 750 W, preferably in Ti with a very quiet fan? Or will the Corsair SF750 continue to be the only top tier option, as Corsair doesn't seem in a rush to update that to the new native connectors/standards.

I currently use custom cables with my SF750 but would prefer a native.

You may want to consider our Extreme 850R Platinum, which is quieter than the SF750 from medium to high loading conditions. It isn't officially SFX12V 4.1 due to not having the latest 12V-2x6 connector. But every SFX12V 4.0 will qualify to be 4.1 with new connector. The electrical performance characteristics required for SFX12V 4.1 (and equivalent ATX 3.1) are actually less stringent than SFX12V 4.0 (and equivalent ATX 3.0).

It isn't officially SFX12V 4.1 due to not having the latest 12V-2x6 connector. But every SFX12V 4.0 will qualify to be 4.1 with new connector. The electrical performance characteristics required for SFX12V 4.1 (and equivalent ATX 3.1) are actually less stringent than SFX12V 4.0 (and equivalent ATX 3.0).

Looks good, but 12V-2x6 only rated for 450 not 600 W is not ideal, apparently stock cables are very stiff and long too.

Can you replace the cable for a 3x8 pin that will do 600 W? I wouldn't consider this with stock cables anyway I always do custom cables.

I know the spec requires 3x max load spike handling, so can you in theory run 600 W off the stock port or is it hard limited?

Extreme 850R Platinum has three PCIe/EPS combo ports so there are two EPS 1-to-1 cables and one PCIe 1-to-2 cable included. If you use a 3-to-1 12VHPWR or 12-2x6 cable, you won't have any port left for EPS, which is required for motherboard. Since our PSUs PCIe/EPS combo ports are rated for up to 300W each, we do offer 2-to-1 12VHPWR cables that are rated for 600W. However, they aren't designed for small form factor builds so you may want to check their specifications to see if they are OK to use.

Some high-end motherboards now require two EPS connectors so it's still best to use the native 12VHPWR port on the Extreme 850R Platinum to reduce cable clutter. Having one slightly longer cable is probably better than a shorter 3-to-1 or 2-to-1 cable. Our "PP14-90" 90 degree angled 12VHPWR has the lowest profile connector in the business so be sure to check that out as well.

Isn't it necessary to upgrade the PCB to implement the new open-open scenario? Therefore a 4.0 PSU wouldn't qualify as 4.1 by simply changing the cable

Yes, technically to be certified as true 4.1, the modular interface on the PSU will also need to be updated for the new connector. So this is something that can't be done on the consumer side, the manufacturers have to make the update from the factory.

Just bought one for a Cooler Master NR200 build (a bit pricey on Amazon but i don’t want to have poor return options with other retailers).

If only you had cables like the Corsair SF750... All the negatives reviews are about this.

Thank you for getting the Extreme 850R! It is one of the best and quietest SFX PSUs you can buy for a high-end SFF build. If you are getting a 4090 Founder's Edition or other non-factory overclocked 4090, you'd be fine with a 450W cable. NVIDIA actually recommends 450W cable for their own 4090 Founder's edition.

We also mentioned in a previous thread that it would be irresponsible for us to include a 600W 12VHPWR connector with a 850W power supply as many high end CPUs are now capable of drawing 200W+ all by themselves, so that'd leave you with only 50W or less for everything else. If you plan on getting a factory overclocked 4090, we'd definitley recommend 1000W PSUs or higher!
