AMD kicks off the 2024 International CES with its new Advancing AI PCs event, and we are live-blogging it! AMD is locked in an arms race with Intel to bring local AI acceleration to PCs in the form of on-chip NPUs. The vast majority of PCs lack discrete GPUs, and so the expectation is that NPUs becoming standard to PC processors will help the software industry respond with a host of AI accelerated client applications, all running locally on the machine. If 2023 was the year of the cloud-based AI, 2024 promises to localize it. AMD in today's event is expected to give us an overview of its AI acceleration portfolio, and possibly launch some new products for the PC.
15:00 UTC: The show is underway, and as always, it's good to see Dr Lisa Su. It's never a CES without her.
15:02 UTC: We were the first to processor-based NPU: Lisa
15:03 UTC: Multi-year Ryzen AI roadmap looking forward to Strix Point.
15:04 UTC: Hawk Point Ryzen 8040 series provides a 60% NPU performance uplift over Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix."
15:06 UTC: HP committed to delivering Ryzen AI powered notebooks and desktops.
15:07 UTC: Ryzen 8040 series mobile processors will start shipping in the market from February 2024.
15:08 UTC: Lenovo commits to Ryzen 8040 series notebook processors starting February 2024.
15:09 UTC: ASUS commits to bring Ryzen AI processors across its vast lineup of notebooks, desktops, and handheld gaming devices.
15:13 UTC: AMD Ryzen 8000G series desktop APUs announced, first desktop processors with an NPU.
15:13 UTC: Ryzen 7 8700G can run Cyberpunk 2077 without a graphics card.
15:15 UTC: AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT 16 GB graphics card announced. The added memory should benefit AI workloads nicely.
15:16 UTC: Ryzen AI software based on ONNX launched, and ROCm support for Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards.
15:20 UTC: Adobe is making its biggest investments in AI-accelerated features across all its creator software.
15:21 UTC: Microsoft is incorporating AI into Windows, Office, and 365 in a big scale. Copilot is at the heart of everything for Microsoft.
15:23 UTC: Strix Point will triple NPU performance generationally, powered by XDNA 2.
15:24 UTC: Next generation Ryzen CPUs confirmed to launch this year.
15:25 UTC: That's all folks, expect a heap of AMD CES coverage in a bit.
