Sony PlayStation has surprised attendees at CES 2024 with the unveiling of custom color slim console covers—the molten metallic finishes on display at their booth are Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver. The presence of matching DualSense controllers confirms that Sony is likely rolling out another batch of its Deep Earth Collection, fashioned specifically for its youthful PS5 Slim refresh (launched back in November 2023). Owners of the standard PlayStation 5 were granted access to the shiny and colorful cover and controller range last Autumn.
The Verge reckons that the Deep Earth Slim covers will go on sale for $54.99 MSRP—which is the same price point given for the standard PS5 customization option. They also note some aesthetical differences: "Unlike the standard white PS5 slim, these don't have the glossy / matte split between the top and bottom plates. I prefer matte all the way, so I'm happy to see that...There's no avoiding dust on that black center section of the PS5, unfortunately." It is encouraging to see Sony rolling out these optional extras so soon after the release of their PS5 Slim model, although they are probably eager to make a bit of profit on accessory sales (margins are tighter when selling core hardware).
