MSI presented a massive table of GeForce RTX 40 SUPER series custom design graphics cards at CES 2024—TPU spent a lot of time photographing and documenting everything GPU-related at the tech company's booth. The kind-of mysterious GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16G EXPERT model seemed to get a lot of attention from online PC hardware communities. The brand new and very substantial EXPERT shroud design integrates a Zero Frozr cooling solution, but folks were quick to link its aesthetic (and vapor chamber setup) to NVIDIA's dual fan Founders Edition cooling solution. MSI has not yet published a dedicated GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16G EXPERT product page, while all of the other models from CES are uploaded and active.

A tipster on social media has posted a screenshot of the 16G EXPERT's specification sheet—wxnod has uncovered alleged factory settings ahead of review and launch day embargos, although pricing is still unknown at the time of writing. The leaked core figures include a boost clock of 2610 MHz in GAMING and SILENT modes (60 MHz above reference), while the MSI Center software suite can activate an Extreme Performance mode: 2625 MHz. These figures align with the SUPER SUPRIM model's core clock specs—the SUPRIM X sits above everything else as the fastest card in MSI's RTX 4080 SUPER stable. MSI's official introduction stated that the 16G EXPERT: "features a push-pull airflow design for enhanced cooling efficiency. The enclosure is constructed with aluminium Die-Casting for structural strength, while Core Pipe and a Vapor Chamber work to efficiently dissipate heat. Lastly, a patented fan design provides quiet yet reliable airflow." We hope to see the MSI GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16G EXPERT's addition to the TPU GPU database.

Reviewers have received evaluation samples:

DaPoets states—in his brief video—that he is under embargo, but "this striking design" will be explored in detail next week.

Haven't other manufacturers tried this type of through-flow design before, with poor results?

It's often compared to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Founders Edition, but the only thing they have in common is the two huge 140mm(?) fans. Also both use a vapour chamber cooler, but the heatsinks are totally different. Nvidia's fins are (can be) more restrictive due to the open design, the fins on MSI's card have to be less restrictive due to the closed "blower" design. But it's channelling the air, which could make it more effective. Plus it looks like MSI used way more material on the heatsink. Btw. was there ever a closed card with two huge 140mm(?) fans? Might be the first one of it's kind.

It remains to be seen what works better, and I am really looking forward to the review. Would put my money on MSI's design, though.

This specific model seems more like an aesthetics appeal than providing optimal cooling. It’s not like they can do much else with FE cards and Nvidia cutting into any margins. It’d be nice if it didnt have a monumental markup, but im expecting a $1399 msrp.

I mean I dunno the only reason I'd buy a 4080/S is If I couldn't get a FE or other 4090 at same price the extra 400 is nothing compared to the 1000/1200 (laugh) for FE and AIB models will cost way more.
The problem is it's almost impossible to get a 4090 at that price.
3090 was just for bragging rights as it should be with minimal performance uplift but the 4090 changed all that with what I hope was an outlier because if the performance gap between the 4090 and 4080 is the new norm it's means the rest of the product line is getting screwed just like this gen. I'm patiently waiting for next gen and have already saved flagship card money to get the top end as that's where the performance is it will just feel weird not owning an xx80ti or x800xt even if it is an upgrade. I'm hoping it's an AMD card as I don't like Nvidia as a company recently but kinda doubt it will be as AMD has starved Radeon devision for to long which I understand, it needed Ryzen pushing hard but now I fear they have ultimately lost the more important battle.

I cant stop making a grin on that clock speed. Silent mode 2610 MHz. Extreme mode 2625 MHz. Thats just comical.

15 MHz differences will hardly make any difference at all.

This is more marketing BS, than anything else.

It's nice to see an interesting design option deflecting the norm 3 fan approach.

It's not exactly nothing.
I bought my 4080 at 1025GBP when the cheapest available 4090 was 1599GBP.
That's a considerable amount of money for me and I couldn't say ''I don't care, I've already spent 1000''.

Just a case of aesthetics being subjective then my friend.
I liked the metallic grating for that very reason, kind of reminds me of the FE blower cards.

I like this. It's practical, good looking, and... Well that's about it but these days it doesn't take much to make something better than the rest. I liked my 980 Twin Fozr but don't like much of MSI's newer stuff. Maybe that will change if they keep going in this direction.

This is a premium model and you probably don't see such design down to the lower tiers.

MSI has been cheaping out big time lately with their lower tier SKUs.
I'd have gone for a Ventus X2 w/ my current card, but it had terrible cooling and a plastic back plate :shadedshu:
