Moore Threads S80 and S70 GPUs Get 100% Performance Boost with Driver Update

Moore Threads S80 and S70 discrete GPUs get a doubling in their gaming performance thanks to the latest driver update that seems to re-architect the software end of the graphics pipeline. The new version 240.90 driver update by Moore Threads was testted by Chinese technology publication EJ Hardware to show an over 100% performance gain in synthetic benchmarks such as 3DMark Fire Strike, and doubling in games such as "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3,"" "League of Legends," "Crossfire," "Risk of Rain 2," and "DOTA 2." The performance impact wasn't very pronounced in "Genshin Impact." In DOTA 2, the older 230.11 driver that was causing the S80 to fail the test, is posting an impressive 100% gain over the older drivers. With its launch drivers the Moore Threads S80 was tested to be comparable to a GeForce GTX 1050. This 100% performance boost should change its market positioning.

I believe that they managed to pull a 100% improvement...in a vacuum. They managed to make a 1060...it's about a decade later than the Nvidia release, it's only corroborated by a Chinese source, and the same rhetoric was proven to be a joke when it was released...because of course it was. I can understand some lax standards...but this is just silly. Why would anyone believe an FPS number with only a target resolution? My Chinese is rusty...but I don't see them comparing this to anything worth purchasing in 2024. Maybe 2020 during the peak of the pandemic...but not now.

The trajectory is pretty strong though -- and CCP understands that they are playing catch up and will basically fund these companies until they are able to compete at the low end.

They're not scared of taking money from the masses and throwing it behind chips/ ai chips, and gfx cards.

Certainly, MT has a long way ahead before they can compete with nVidia and AMD. Still, silicon desing is a long term game so they'll get there as long as they don't run out of funds or the or get shut down by the government. I'm more concerned with them violating some IP or getting on someone's bad side and getting sued/sanctioned into the ground like Huawei.

I'm rooting for Intel, MT and anyone willing to challenge the GPU market because, as it is now, in a few years time it will be cheaper to buy a penthouse in the middle of Manhattan than buying a RTX xx90 from nVidia or it's AMD equivalent, if there is one.

Don't get me wrong, I'm rooting for the underdog, too. I just want something that works. Intel Alchemist is mostly fine by now if the reports are true, but the cards are nowhere to be found. MT is unfortunately still a joke.

Definitely. Though effort alone is not enough if the final product doesn't work or is hugely inferior.

So, when Intel pulled this same stance with Alchemist people laughed. It was a chip giant entering a market that they had tried to enter before and retracted from.

Moore's Thread is a Chinese company. They're basically allowed to profit from all of the stolen research they've gotten from Intel, Nvidia, and AMD...and they can output something that's 3 full generations behind current tech, if you focus on one of the lowest end cards. I don't think that this describes trajectory. I think what you're describing is someone who has been sat down with literally the best technology and materials, and squeezes out a sub-par product. This is why capitalism isn't a perfect system, but its inherent competition and force to address market demands is a better system than having central government control. Remember, as long as you can tell the world you're doing well...it's considered a win.


Joking aside though, Alchemist will in one generation be Battlemage. In the span of one card generation we've gone from janky performance in older versions of directx to acceptable ones (based on multiple sources completing verifiable independent testing). We've gotten driver updates that made games go from "executable" to playable. I can see Moore's Thread going from bad performance to good performance....qualifying good as 1050 level performance. Please note that the 1050 used 75 watts, came out in 2016, and is now less than favorably competing against APUs...the 6800U specifically... The idle power of the card is 110 watts...with full load being 240. It's about double the performance (with huge asterix), drawing more than triple the wattage...and you're only comparing it to a card 8 years old.
So...do I think they've made progress? Yes. Do I think it's as advertised? No. Do I think they will compete with Alchemist...let alone AMD and Nvidia? No. Do I see them touting this, then pulling something like AMD? Yes, qualifying that as trying to sell their GPUs to internal Chinese customers as replacements (read, mining and AI) for items the western world is trying to with hold in order to get them to play ball as a fair actor rather than the (as they stated) entity at war with western values.


If you'd like a parallel, it takes no real effort. Let's look at automobiles. Red Flag (HongQi) is the Chinese domestic brand (HongQi video...showing "quality"). It's basically known to be a knock-off version of what is available in the west, put together out of pure chinesium. That's badly sourced knock-off parts, short lived components, and the glue holding things together...beyond actual glue...is the belief that an infinite amount of money will be plowed into the manufacturer because it's a national symbol. You can judge yourself, but I'd suggest that China cannot continue to make garbage like this forever, but they aren't motivated to do more because they know it'll be supported no matter what. That's going to mean 1050 level performance is fine...and in the next cycle we'll get 1060 level performance. Then the bar will be moved, and instead of competing against Nvidia it'll be competing only against old offerings from them, where a generational leap will be enough to try and sell more. Good lord...it's the 4070 is as good as a 3090 tactic used by Nvidia we all saw and hated...



It's good to predict the future. It's depressing that all you need to do is look at what was already done and the stories write themselves.

In fact, this graphics card (MTT S80) can run a lot of games.
I use it to play World of Tanks at 2K resolution with high graphics settings, averaging around 65 fps.
Recently, Moore Threads just released a driver update enabling me to play the Palworld, although the frame rate isn't very high.
I purchased the graphics card at the end of October last year and have noticed that with each driver update, the gaming experience keeps improving.

It's been almost a year since the release of the MTT S80. There are numerous game testing videos about it on bilibili, and there are also plenty of reviews in the Chinese community and media.
Since its main buyers are in mainland China, and YouTube is not a commonly used platform for everyone, it's normal for people outside of China to feel unfamiliar with it.
If anyone is interested, they can go to bilibili to watch usage tests by ordinary players.
Moore Threads is just a recently established private company, like any other startup.
The performance of their first-generation product has honestly exceeded my expectations.

Here are my 3DMark results (in graphics score):
Fire Strike: 7947
Fire Strike Extreme: 3956
Fire Strike Ultra: 2251
3DMark 11 Extreme: 4045

The model of MTT S80 was identified incorrectly, so I contacted the 3D Mark company.
They said they could only correct the model of S80 when GPU-Z recognizes it correctly, which is why I came to this forum.
Unfortunately, the 3D Mark website has hidden my results, so you can't publicly see my scores.
