Sony VAIO UX490N Announced

Sony has put a new ultra-portable micro PC up on their site for sale. The UX490 packs a 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Solo U2200 ULV processor with 2MB of L2 cache, 1GB of DDR2 PC2-3200 RAM, a pair of integrated cameras (front: 0.3M pixels and back: 1.3M pixels), a fingerprint scanner, 48GB SSD, 4.5-inch wide SVGA LCD 1024x600 resolution touch screen and a GMA 950 graphics card. Furthermore, you'll also find built-in Bluetooth/WiFi, built-in microphone, an Ethernet port, audio in/out jacks, an MS Duo expansion slot, WWAN support (AT&T), genuine copy of Windows Vista Business and a Li-ion battery good for 1.5 to 3.5-hours. that battery life is delirious 1.5hrs in use but 3.5 on standby. im sure thats worth paying a kidney for!

IMHO id rather get an uber SLI gaming laptop with that kinda money. utter stupidness what a waste of time. some of the 'business end' laptops arent exactly that heavy + ontop of that you get a bigger screen & better battery life.

I got my Area-51 for $500 more. And you get 17" Wide High Definition screen..now how's that? lol game freely...and if it can do that imagine how word processing would be lol and you can put 2x64GB SSDs in this baby..although the price would be higher but I'd always go for a notebook even if it's bigger...besides I get 2 hours battery life gaming on power save.

Just get this SONY and show off..it's not that you're getting better features off it from a notebook packed with C2D are you?

And anyway most "Showoff notebooks" go at around that price unless you want some certain paintjobs that blowup the price like I believe they do at Voodoo.

And to add with that in the edit...AlienWare is overpriced and it's just $500 more than this Ultra-Portable machine. For $500 more I'm taking around 13" more of space.

That's all well and good, but Gaming notebooks and UMPCs target 2 entirely different markets, thus are not directly comparable. Tho I do agree these are overpriced.

Here I agree about the market target. But let's face this. I have paid $3k on a gaming notebook and you get GAMING specifications. Fair enough, you don't need them for business. But we all know if you want something smaller you can get it on the market can't we?

So why would we bother paying to get the design of this machine unless we really have the money to? It would surely have a better processor and of course can be upgradable in most cases. And you could get a 10" notebook. It's still small and it has a 6.5" larger screen. (Don't know about the various specs on these though so I won't push it there).

Wouldn't say that SONY don't know what they're doing but before the prices drop I doubt it will hit a high sell rate, even if it's a very nice piece of work and we can't say it's not nice can we?

not to mention that Sony are poaching on Compaqs & IBM's territory or whoever that makes PALMTOPS, or if they dont want a palmtop then get a Blackberry communicator. u can text, recieve calls & send emails as well as it being wi-fi enabled (or at least i think it is but dont quote me on it)

most mobiles come with the same features nower days anyway so i dont understand what the hoo haaa is about making a 'laptop' so small. if u want one that small then you should be looking for something else else where not laptops.

want something smaller then a laptop? get a palmtop, dont like the palm top get a blackberry dont like a black berry then get a Sony Erricson/Nokia smartphone

I've had one of these babies, not the SSD model but the $1,300 40gb normal HD kind. They are hella badass, the screen is so small and clear. I'd defiantly get another if I had money to blow. Sold it cause I didn't have a use for it.

Nokia phones kick ass. My uncle and my friend own an N95. Whats the point in having a 1.3 and a 0.3Mpixel camera when you get 5Mpixel on N95 for cheaper? xD And they do run loads of stuff. It connects wirelessly etc etc. Ok it wont have an SSD drive so what or ethernet ports whatever. But for that price of the UX490N you could get a nice phone and a basic notebook.

Here we see a clear example of the NEED of such a machine. If you really need it get it...if not why bother getting it?

Also I would add as our friend here told us about the HDD. Solid State right now is way to HIGH and we can see a pitfall in prices between our friends pervious model and the new release. I'd add it's all about the hard drive.

I cant agree... with notebooks they will always find methods to save power. such as Intels Ultra Low Voltage cpu series & of course another company has found out how to make eve more energy effecient RAM (that was posted on her 1 - 2 weeks ago) As for phones. it doesnt matter about standby. you dont buy a mobile phone to have it on standby, you buy it so u can use it. a long standby time is a bonus but the fones totally useless if u cant chat more then an hr. (& im not saying that the N-95 has an hr talk time, im sure its much longer but not as long as people would hope & expect from a mobile phone.)

you cant fit larger batterys but you can always fit a battery which can hold/yield more power.

but its a stupid argument comparing a mobile phone with a laptop anyway. their all good for what they are need for plus & minus a few negatives here n there.

I can say here we went from Ultra-Portable machine up to large notebooks and down to pocket sized machines.

But I still think the price of the UX490N is high because of it's drive. I've seen similar models not long ago and must add they're pretty cool too. And they "attract" you to them, well they attracted me anyway.

I forgot to add that if you wipe the bloated OS and return it to a clean state don't expect anything built in on the machine to work. By the time you load everything you need to make all the hardware operational you're back up to about 60 processes.
