yep these are for biz that need a lot of em and don't have time to install on each system. glad to see this actually. if yall want more people to use linux yall need to respect companies that are willing to do this.

also this move ensures that it's also "certified" to work w linux and have the least issues if you wanna roll your own image of it as well... if it has the option to ship with linux it will work.

This isn't about "not having enough time to install Linux". Linux installation goes very quickly, even on a pokey RPi4 with an SD card. And it's easy enough to clone a Linux boot drive. I did so in the late Nineties as a Linux sysadmin with HDDs (spinners).

Any knuckle dragging dorkwad who can follow basic instructions can install a popular Linux distro on a box filled with 5-year old common PC desktop hardware.

It's about stability and above all SUPPORT.

Tell that to HP, Lenovo, Dell, AMD. Intel, Arm, Nvidia,... All Customers of Ubuntu Pro Desktop. As far as i know aside Servers also a lot of media companies use linux for Media creation. Ubuntu Pro is accounting for nearly 34% of Linux market share. Whereby Linux has a market share of 4,03% tewo month ago.

I do all my music production in linux as well... I use mainly a dell precision T3600 and it does nicely w linux and dell has linux as an option of many of the precision line of both desktop and laptops and I think it looks like they may offer it preinstalled on latitudes too soon.

That is not going to be fun (and does defeat the purpose of having a factory setup machine).

They would be insane to pre-install a brand new release like 24.04.

Would make sense, if Ubuntu itself was a bleeding edge distro or anywhere close to it. But it isn't.

I'm not proposing the release be delayed a week and shipped with 24.01. Halfway through LTS cycles would be optimal. This is just poor timing. Already 40% of the free support period of 22.04 has ran out.

1. It depends what the user define as fun. There are people out there who think LFS and BLFS are fun. Nobody wants to be beaten. Except the masochists.

Velocity Micro isn't a bunch of newbs.

My guess is they actually tested a variety of Ubuntu builds in their laboratories before settling on this particular version. The decision was probably influenced by feedback from key customers, you know people who placed large orders before. It's not like they wrote a bunch of Ubuntu version numbers on little scraps of paper, tossed them into a fishbowl and drew out one.

As I said, I know about (enterprised focused) Linux distros using old bits for stability. Little has changed in the 25+ years.

When I was working in Physics all our Workstations from HP or Dell came with Linux/Unix. It would have been unthinkable to use garbage Windows for actual work we were doing and our life would have been hell trying to compile a lot of the code we had for Windows.

If some of the software I need was released natively for Linux I'd make the switch form sure especially with the depressing AI infested crap Windows has in store for Win 12.

Most IT-systems need to be stable. They aren't used for version hunting.

well to be fair ubuntu pro also covers their server edition which is most of ubuntu's usage comes from in enterprise.

Yah, just make sure to uncheck the xzutils package before you click install.
