The ROG Ally X handheld gaming console ASUS plans to unveil on June 2, has not just a fixed microSD card slot, and a 40% larger battery, but also an upgraded main memory, MysteryLupin, a reliable source with ASUS leaks, reports. The console features 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory, compared to 16 GB on the regular ROG Ally with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme. The larger battery should give it usage of up to 8 hours on a full charge, while the larger memory should definitely improve performance, given that the SoC is the same Z1 Extreme ASUS uses in the regular ROG Ally. Besides the larger memory and battery, the console features an industry standard M.2-2280 NVMe SSD drive bay, with a pre-installed 1 TB SSD. This should open users up to the widest possible range of SSD upgrades. ASUS is reportedly pricing the ROG Ally X at $799, a $100 increase over the original ROG Ally with the Z1 Extreme—a premium that's actually shaping up to be good value.

Just unnecessary

should have been better upgrading the CPU vs the RAM

I would’ve preferred that they worked with Valve and having a proper port of SteamOS.

I hope that when there is a Steam Deck 2 in 2026 or so, it comes with 32GB of RAM as 16GB is getting tight for many games and 24GB will probably be too tight by then.

So it'll have 3x the memory of 90(70?) percent of all Apple laptops sold?

While 24 GB is still good (4/8 GB can be dedicated to UMA while still having 20/16 GB for system RAM) for a device like this, they should've have just gone to 32 GB for a proper dual-channel configuration, although that doesn't matter much with embedded/soldered RAM.

The Ally X is turning into the perfect device. The fact the memory is LPDDRx means the additional memory bandwidth will also deliver additional performance, while also giving this user a non restrictive amount of memory. Bigger battery, larger SSD support. If it also comes with a USB4 port for external GPU support, instead of the proprietary one currently,

It needs OLED but I think they are saving that for Ally 2.

After repeated Asus RMA scam, I wonder will people consider buying Asus products. In this case, I believe Asus is basically fixing what they messed up previously with regards to the SD card slot, though I welcome the upgrade to the amount of RAM. Being a Windows device, 16GB is very limited, especially when its shared with the iGPU.

This seems like an appropriate refresh style device where it improves the most important immediate negatives of the Ally. I've been pleased with my Ally, but I also haven't been running it at max performance which is likely what slags the SD card/reader. I think 2025 will be a much more interesting year for the handheld type devices since Qualcomm, Intel and AMD should have high performance low power options available.

I think it is still dual-channel. DDR5 recently introduced 12GB and 24GB dimms.

I have an ROG Ally, and it's an impressive device. The VRR screen is a huge plus, which means performance is "good enough" right now. It does need more memory in some titles, and the larger battery and faster RAM are all it needs IMO.

My Steam Deck is collecting dust. After using Windows on this handheld a while, I'm used to it and it works great for playing games. Don't miss the Deck or SteamOS at all.

If you don't have a handheld at this point, and were thinking of buying one, this new version is the one to get (out of all the handhelds).

should have just waited for 20CU rdna 3.5 8core 16threads AMD Strix Halo ( but id like to see a 40CU rdna 3.5 model with 6 cores 12 threads ( more power for igpu)

Ima gonna pass on this one

NO THANKS ASUS

40cu 12core strix halo can be 50 wats on battery ( but docked can go up to 120watss.. id kill to see this HH even the full 16core 40cu model (i just need the 6-8c with 40 rdna CUs..)

but a strix halo X3D would be even better with 8cores and a crap-ton of 128MB/s of AMD's "NEW" "MALL cache" or 3d V-cache mixed with rdna Infinity cache all in one cpu=idgpu package

I want 3D stacked cpu & gpU apus & cpus darning @amd (WHERE TF ARE THEY) YOU SHOWED THIS IN 2021 LOL
