ASUS ROG Ally X Specs Confirmed: 24GB LPDDR5X-7500, M.2-2280, and 80Wh Battery

The specs sheet of the upcoming ASUS ROG Ally X handheld game console was leaked to the web, confirming many of the rumors that have been doing rounds for the past month. The Ally X is a definite step up from the ROG Ally Extreme. It was originally rumored to be just a design revision that relocates the microSD card slot away from a thermal vent on the original design, which was causing memory cards to fail. The specs sheet confirms that the ROG Ally X features a larger M.2 drive bay with support for M.2-2280 drives. You'll be spoiled for choice picking a drive to go with this device. The drive included is 1 TB—double the 500 GB of the original ROG Ally.

Next up, there had been rumors of a significantly larger battery, but we didn't have an exact capacity figure, until now. It turns out, that the ROG Ally X packs a massive 80 Wh battery, which works toward a roughly 40% battery life improvement. While the CPU is the same Ryzen Z1 Extreme, ASUS improved the memory, which is now 24 GB LPDDR5X-7500, compared to 16 GB LPDDR5-6400 on the ROG Ally Extreme. This is a 50% increase in memory size, and 17% increase in memory bandwidth. Lastly, ASUS is introducing USB4 type-C, with integrated DisplayPort 1.4 and PD 3.0 output.

Swapping an M.2 module for a larger one, and using a higher capacity memory chip don't require entire overhauls of the system. Getting USB4 is likely the most significant engineering work, but even that is fairly minor. A display/chassis revision, incorporating Hall effect sensors etc, these would require more work.
Larger battery is great as is fixed micro sd placement.

Of course there could actually be a more extensive internal redesign like the Steam Deck OLED had, we won't know until it's torn down.

ASUS puts out new laptop models very frequently, so this isn't too unusual to see an improved version of a first gen device within a year.

I’d think that changing to LPDDR5x is probably a bigger change than the USB4. They likely just routed the PCIe lanes from their proprietary connector to the usb4 chipset.

My sticks are perfect but my SD Card slot doesn’t work and I think it died almost immediately. I never used it until the controversy broke about the issue and it never picked up any of the cards I inserted into it. I was surprised because I used a manual fan curve that was much more aggressive than the stock settings, so it should never have got as hot but it still died. I don’t want to get mine warrantied yet as it is otherwise in great condition and only has a 3% battery wear, though I’ve been using the 80% battery care limiter.

Still criminal that they're quietly fixing this by releasing a new model rather than recalling the faulty ones.
Even if it's only 30% of Ally handhelds with cooked MicroSD slots, it's still recall material. I suspect it's higher than 30% but I haven't seen a poll yet.

Had mine for about 10 months now and the sticks and SD card slot works perfectly. Also, Asus already made a statement a while back that they made revisions of the Ally that fixes the SD card slot and people who bought can return their handheld in to get a new one.

Mine is still working perfectly fine

7 month old and it was also a second hand (not sure how long the previous owner used it )
