According to Jon Peddie Research latest report, the global GPU and CPU markets ended Q1 2024 on growth. GPU shipments reached 70 million units, while PC CPU shipments increased by 33% year-over-year, the second consecutive yearly increase in over two decades. Over the next five years, discrete GPUs are projected to achieve 22% penetration in the PC market as the overall GPU installed approaches 3 billion units by 2026. Among major GPU vendors, AMD's market share dipped 0.7% from last quarter, while Intel gained 0.3% and Nvidia rose 0.4%. However, overall GPU shipments declined 9.9% quarter-over-quarter. The total GPU attach rate for PCs was 113%, slightly down from the prior quarter. Desktop graphics add-in board shipments also decreased 14.8%.

While Q1 is typically flat or down versus Q4, Jon Peddie Research's president suggests this quarter's performance could signal a return to normal seasonality. With Microsoft, AMD and Intel promoting AI PCs, and forecasts pointing to growth in Q2, there are optimistic signs - although semiconductor suppliers are guiding 7.9% down on average for next quarter.

I have respect for JPR. I value their info. It's certainly much more accurate than a Steam Hardware Survey but it's expensive so I only get a bit here and there when a tech site posts some info.

I do wonder how they arrive at the installed base though. I guess they look at number of units sold over a period of years which would be the average lifetime of a GPU but then that's just a guestimate as well. Might be close though.

JPR is full of hacks. How does Intel have an 18% discrete GPU share?

JPR is about sales during a given period.
Steam Hardware Survey is about actual gaming systems.

Err, simply by tracking the people in the internet.

It's about processors with integrated graphics. In discrete, intel is about 0.2%.

AMD: 16%
intel: 66%
nvidia: 18%

Whoops I read the graph colors wrong. Still don’t like JPR but I’m the one with egg on my face.

The graph shows combined GPU and iGPU percentages I suspect.

It would be more useful if the actual sales numbers (according to Jon Peddie) were included because percentages don't tell the whole story.

For example, this is the iGPU graph from Jon Peddie for the same period with sales numbers

PR_CPU_Q124_002.png

On the face of it AMD increased its iGPU market share from 15% to 18% in the period Q1 23 to Q1 24. But if you look at the actual numbers it was 6.45M units for Q1 23 and 10.08M units for Q1 24 - a year on year increase of 56%

They should state the DIY market in a separate graph, just to show how much corruption is going on with those intel & nvidia "partner" shenanigans.
In the JPR's case, "total" means DIY (the only truly representative segment) + OEMs (totally dominated by intel) + notebooks
