Mixed baggage on all fronts when it comes to trademarks, patents, and copyrights. There is a lot that is both right and wrong about it and in regards to who helps and benefits and hinders the most within society. These systems benefit people with the right connections mostly rich or with connections with people that are rich much like tax loopholes as well as things like the judicial system being harder or more lenient based in no small part on how good a lawyer you have or have much disdain they may or may not have on a individual bias or otherwise. There is this false pretense that we care about monopolies in society when they care more about the perception of monopolies. If they can't see it in plain sight being actively abusive easily it's not a monopoly like Warren Buffet owns a huge % of numerous major companies.

It's not like it's him just being a Rockafella owning oil he's diversified. It's doesn't change a lot though we all pay the baked in Warren Buffet tax on many goods. Imagine how great his life would have turned out had his oppertunity in life he had been born into was mining blood diamonds? Kind of a different outlook than a small investment on the ground floor level of something that took the entire world by storm and he's continued to benefit and ride that stormwind. Now I'm not saying you can fix all of that, but there are a lot of things that can be fixed if we could work past the greed the corruption the entitlement and luxaries of being privy to a better situation.

Anyway **** it sure sucks to roll the dice on type 1 diabeties even today let in the late 80's or early 90's. Is it better is it worse to be born sooner or later than that time frame well...I don't know it's bad either way Bret Michaels or Halle Berry probably have some perspective on it though even though their wealthy because facts remain type-1 diabetes ****'s you daily sometimes in the *** other times in the arm, thigh, stomach or where else you want to hit that vain. The difference is today there are stomach implants, but the cost healthcare is ridiculous for a incurable disease where every day is life and death knocking at the door just hi I'm still a hell of a prick how about you!!? It's fine though BIG PHARMA needs it's moar monies their really good people though I swear I say **** a lot in fact.

The irony of this subject being about pump designs and you can pretty well guarantee the insulin pump is also patented. Like thanks someone's life being less miserable comes at a patented cost because people are greedy ******'s. Meanwhile Metallica needs more money for unknown reasons and we should care more about that problem.

Swede, you sure picked an odd hill to die on. Got sniped twice before I even showed up.
Look, I have no feelings for Asetek, but they're not a patent troll.
Are they using a flawed system to their advantage and then some, yes.

I have to agree they are not patent trolls as patent trolls are companies that buy patents and do not manufacture the product, they rely on income from the patents and often sue to ensure said income.

It's been invalid outside of the US since 2017, I believe. 7 years of competition out-designing Asetek's stagnant, 20-year old premise has caught up to them.
Yup, and that's why I mentioned it needing to be invalidated since it never was contested in the US to my knowledge. I was really surprised that nobody went the route of having the patent invalidated in the US after that ruling, but I believe everyone they sued in the US after that proved that they weren't infringing.

I think the argument here has just come from different understandings of the term "patent troll". Swede is sticking to the dictionary definition of patent troll, ie a "company who doesn't produce anything, merely collects licensing fees from others". Technically, he's correct - but by that rather limited measure, isn't ARM also patent troll? All they do is license their IP! /s

I'm happy to use the more loose, and perhaps more obvious interpretation of the term; Asetek trolled everyone else by filing a frivolous patent and then abusing the patent system as litigiously as possible in as many regions as possible.

Either way, I think we're all in agreement that Asetek were not the good guys in any way.
