AMD's upcoming "Strix Halo" mobile processor that features up to 16 "Zen 5" CPU cores and a powerful iGPU with 40 compute units, is beginning to surface in online benchmark databases. We've gone into the juicy technical bits about the processor in our older articles, but put simply, it is a powerful mobile processor meant to square off against the likes of the Apple M3 Pro and M3 Max. A chiplet-based processor, much like the upcoming "Granite Ridge" desktop processor and "Fire Range" mobile processor, "Strix Halo" features up to 16 full-sized "Zen 5" cores, as it uses up to two of the same "Eldora" CCDs as them; but wired to a large I/O die that contains the oversized iGPU, and an NPU, besides the memory controllers. The iGPU has 40 compute units (2,560 stream processors), and is based on the RDNA 3.5 graphics architecture, while the NPU is the same 50 TOPS-class unit carried over from "Strix Point."

A prototype HP laptop powered by a "Strix Halo" processor that uses a single 8-core "Zen 5" CCD, was spied on the web. This chip has eight full-sized "Zen 5" cores that share a 32 MB L3 cache. The iGPU on the I/O die has its own 32 MB Infinity Cache memory that cushions memory transfers. In our older reports, we speculated as to what the memory interface of "Strix Halo" would be. It turns out that the chip exclusively features a 256-bit wide LPDDR5X memory interface, which is double the bus width of "Strix Point." This is essentially what a "quad-channel DDR5" memory interface would be, and AMD is using a memory speed standard of at least LPDDR5X-8000. From the machine's point of view, this would be just a couple of hardwired LPDDR5X chips, or a pair of LPCAMM 2 modules. Back to the benchmarks, and we are shown a single-thread CPU score of 2099 to 2177 points, and a multithreaded score ranging between 5477 points to 13993 points. The laptop was tested with an unknown version and distribution of Linux. The CPU cores are shown boosting up to 5.35 GHz.

Because many see no point of this SKU versus a separate CPU and GPU, I decided to run some numbers:

Depending on the configuration, Strix Halo can be anywhere from the same to half the power at the same CPU and GPU performance. The combined CPU/GPU/RAM with lower power helps with more room for larger battery on top of chip power savings. The part only needs to be $1000 or less for it to be a more cost-effective solution as well.

While I somewhat agree it'd be amazing if AMD can actually bring Strix Halo into AM5 desktop, what I really want is for laptops with it to be TRULY available, especially out of the USA. Also, WITHOUT ANY DGPU.

Who is the target market? I'd love to have a laptop with an APU that has a huge GPU, but since this requires 2 dies to be active to run a single CPU core, it's going to have fairly high idle power consumption so it's not going to be great as an efficient laptop chip. And since it's not customizable there's not going to be a huge amount of interest on desktop. I guess there's already the 7945HX3D but it isn't exactly competitive in terms of idle power consumption. If AMD and Intel want to use multiple chips in mobile APUs they're going to need to solve this. (Intel has already tried with Meteor Lake, by putting LPE island cores on the memory controller chip, which works but isn't perfect.)

Also a typical gaming laptop is going to have something more like an 8-core CPU and a big dGPU. This is also similar to what a lot of gaming desktops have. If we just want an APU for a gaming laptop which doesn't need a dGPU, then I think 16 CPU cores is going to add more cost than value.

AMD has mentioned that there will be several versions of the Strix Halo chips; each one can have one or two 8 core CCD chips + the graphics & i/o chips that supports up to 40 CU iGPU. If laptop OEMs want a single 8 core CCD + the full 40 CU iGPU, I am sure AMD will sell it to them. The 16 core version is just the top end, for mobile workstations and the like.

How come their APU's can typicvally run higher memory frequencies than the desktop Zen CPU's, this has been the case from AM4 and is now contuning to AM5 where the 9 series Zen chips get a small speed bump from the "sweetspot" 6000MT/s to 6400 whilst this APU is able to handle 8000MT/s and upwards?? why can we not see the same on desktop CPU variants when it comes to RAM speed?

AM4 APU's can run 4400+mhz DDR4 and are generally known to be able to run higher frequencies which is not the case for most desktop AM4 CPU's barring the odd golden sample, so is not restricted to soldered RAM, just the APU's in general.

In contrast, desktop non-APU CPUs typically rely on discrete GPUs for graphics tasks. These discrete GPUs have their own dedicated high-speed VRAM, making the system less dependent on the frequency of the system RAM. Therefore, the memory controller in non-APU CPUs isn't necessarily optimized for higher frequency RAM to the same extent as in APUs.

Still makes no sense if you have a memory controller on the APU that can run higher memory frequency, surely they would integrate that into the regular desktop counterparts, AMD allow PBO, CO, Overclocking etc as they know there is a market for all of those things as well as higher RAM frequency.

The APUs are monolythic, while the CPUs are chiplet-based.

For me AMD is creating a market in the handheld space that will be difficult to gain any market share in. You know that Valve and everyone else involved in handhelds is salivating at this chip being the basis of their handheld. The MINI PC market is too greedy as a handheld is cheaper than most MINI PCs (where I live). We could see real hierarchy in the handheld space soon. I have given up on APUs for Desktop though as building an AM5 based APU is still more than the Steam Deck with the APU bring like 65% of the cost.

I don’t see how this will come to AM5. The 256bit memory bus (likely soldered, at that) eliminates that immediately. Now it could come to the desktop in a SFF, similar to a Mac Studio or mini, or maybe an AIO. Raise the TDP and put a big cooler on it, and it might outpace mid-range combos.

Yes, this might finally be the big chip I've been waiting to see from the ATi purchase. The console stuff they've made has been good, but this is the first time we've seen such a potentially powerful chip for the desktop space.

I would like so much for someone to create an mini-ITX board with this apu and lpddr memory soldered. I own a nice mini-ITX (Lian Li PC-Q12B) case that I've wanted for many years it to be a nice enough system when it comes to gaming but since it can't have a discrete card in it I still waiting for something that finally makes it go as I envisioned. Currently it has a 2400G. The 8700G is the first GPU that I considered the upgrade, but I'm holding of a little longer to see what comes along.
