NVIDIA to Focus on Triple SLI

NVIDIA has officially confirmed that it plans to launch triple SLI, and has also revealed that it is currently focusing more on that than on developing new and more powerful graphics processors. When asked about the company refreshing its products, NVIDIA's chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang said the following:

We decided that the refresh that we would do this time was [GeForce] 8800 GT, and this is just a barn burner refresh. We are really proud of the 8800 GT and we are going to put our focus here. From [two GeForce] 8800 GT [graphics cards], you could obviously do SLI and soon you'll be able to do three-way SLI, so you are going to be able to put a lot of GPU horsepower into your system, starting with a very affordable 8800 GT, and so - this is our focus for now.

This also would seem to conflict with rumours that triple SLI is only initially planned for the 8800 GTX and Ultra cards, as Huang suggests that the company is working on triple SLI for the 8800 GT.

this is just an excuse to sell more products and a reason to slow down single card development, why haven't they been developing multicore Gpu's?

YAY! I can't wait to spend $1500 just for the motherboard, video cards and power supply it takes to run those things! OH yeah, need a BIG case for 3 video cards... need 5 million fans so it doesn't overheat, and I need an uber 10GHz processor and DDR5000 RAM so it doesn't bottleneck! YEAH!!

Triple SLi is a waste of time/money. How many people actually use it? Probably not as many people as are having issues with 8800GT in Vista 64.

nah id think the gx2 cards are more of a a dual vga card since they were connected via sli rather than being a combined processor, intel will be the firstto release a multicore gpu.

The dual G92 GPU will come in january 2008. And there will be a refresh on those 8800GT's, cause there will be G92 GPU's end of the year that will come with 128 stream processor's like the G80 graphic cards, (8800GTX/Ultra).

I think people often read too much into reports like this. He said they were focusing on it now, chances are he just means they are working on it as their primary project to get it out the door. That doesn't mean this is all they are working on, or that it will be the only thing they will work on forever. They just want to get the technology up and running and hopefully out the door.

In all honesty, they don't need to keep working on faster single cards right away. With the release of G92 it might be a good idea to give releasing new hardware a rest for a little while.

Personally, I think SLI is too much of a pain in the ass, forget triple-SLI. I think they should work on perfecting SLI with two cards before throwing a third in there.

Thats a good idea. Make Dual-core / sli cards cheaper and get developers to code their games better for them. This way there won't be any real need for four and a half new video cards to come out every 3 and a half months..

Its the same thing ATI is doing. Tricrossfire and quadcrossfire. I see no difference and if one acts as a PPU, it should really be something special.

I know the 9800s are still slated..but for all we know they may not show up until the Nehalem technology chips from Intel are out...

I suppose a revised GTX might be helpful, but I don't expect it would be anything different, sans the nm processing.

This is not good. Trying to cram more heat and cards onto a motherboard is not the idea...developers should be trying to minimize that. Nvidia needs to focus more on single-processor cards. 2x and 3x SLI will only cause problems with games and miscellaneous applications. Hell, you still can't alt+tab out of a ton of games when running SLI - a trivial bug at worst.

Or, they are saying that if you want the top cream of the crop, then you're going to need proper cooling, which, most hardcore or high-end users already do, or are willing to get.

For those who want a more simple solution, but still get nice performance, you have cards like the GT, and whatever else follows of that caliber.

I don't believe that the first wave, or even second wave of these tri-SLI configurations are going to be for the 'average' or even experienced consumer.
