Looking at IRS site, you are totally wrong. It is not sales tax, because there is no sale, but you have to pay income tax.

That is the casual f* up in US, you win a car, but you cannot afford it, because you have to cover like 20-30% of it in tax.

Taxing gifts/prizes might be a global thing, here in India as well there is income tax on prizes/gifts(monetary). For cash prizes tax is around 40% of prize, for prizes/gifts there is an upper limit after which tax needs to be paid. Also depending on value and category of good there is Customs duty on import and additional tax(GST) that needs to be paid.

Edit: checked and income tax is 31.2% not 40%.

Depends on the price of the goods, for us it is 3K€ yearly after 3K you pay the the tax 23%~ imho for the overhead sum.

Yep similar rules here as well, beyond the limit you tax on overhead. Also precious metals and jewels are counted under monetary group. For customs duty/import tax, limit was $100 US beyond which duty and GST(Previously VAT) is payable.

Great, thanks, but that's not how it should work boss. I was just curious about experiences from fellow TPU US members about wining stuff at their places.

It is a fine idea at the core, but people are getting upset either way... because of modern times and modern problems.

I never heard of anyone having to pay anything after winning in a hardware giveaway. We make sure vendors send packages as DDP (so custom charges etc are paid by them)

You have to do it by law everywhere Wiz... even in our EU... US has IRS for that. You have to report it in your yearly income. Tax avoiding, well, intentional or not is a crime. You really cannot change anything about that... it is pretty normal and common.
