Black Myth: Wukong is undoubtedly 2024's best-selling game, so far. Released in August 2024 and gaining 18M sales within two weeks, PC and PS5 users have been enjoying this game since its release, and Xbox gamers have just been sitting at the back seat missing out on all the fun. Now, GameStop has taken advantage of the situation, offering two options to the Series S users.
GameStop posted on X, offering Series S users a trade in price of $272.50 in exchange for their Xbox S, which is not far off from the price of a new Xbox Series S, $289.99. With no release date for the game on Xbox, players on the Series S might be tempted to jump ship. Either the gamers remain patient and wait for the game to come to the console, or they trade in their Series S, and perhaps use credit to purchase a PS5 and enjoy the game that has been making waves in the gaming community recently.
While this is a strategic way for GameStop to buy the Xbox S at a lower price and sell at the original price later when Microsoft has made their way back into the competition, an X user noted that GameStop is "just collecting dust."
"Our trade values are now unbeatable.
The same XBOX Series S we sell for $289.99 we'll buy for up to $272.50."—GameStop(@gamestop) September 3, 2024
While some gamers in the gaming community hint at a possibility of platform limitations of the Xbox X, Microsoft has firmly denied these claims, saying that their console is more than capable of running the game.
Others hint at a case of timed exclusivity by Sony PlayStation, but this is just speculation as there is no tangible proof. With the game reaching over $850 million in sales, Xbox users are under pressure to either wait for the game's release on Xbox, or switch platforms now that there is a golden opportunity.
With the gravity of the matter, whether Microsoft can handle this by quickly turning the tables, bringing Black Myth Wukong to Xbox, is an unknown fact. This marketing move by GameStop is the clear picture of how deadly the console wars are.
And whether Xbox S users agree to the proposal by GameStop is almost certain, as the best-selling game's release has been postponed indefinitely on their console, although we can't conclude. But what we can say is, Microsoft is on the rough end of the wars, and they need to act fast.
Are you playing the best-selling game already? And what do you think about this marketing move? Let us know in the comments.
