Sucker Punch, developer of the wildly popular Ghost of Tsushima, recently announced Ghost of Yōtei as the follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima and confirmed that this is only the beginning of a seemingly expansive franchise. Ghost of Yōtei is the first indirect sequel to Ghost of Tsushima to take place in what Sony calls the Ghost franchise and follows a new character, Atsu, on a quest for revenge in feudal Japan. It will launch on PS5 in 2025, although Sony has yet to reveal a firm release date.

In an interview with The New York Times, Sucker Punch revealed that it had already started planning Ghost of Yōtei as a follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima before the original game was even announced. It also revealed that it had already started working with Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick franchise, on a cinematic adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, and that there are other games coming to the Ghost franchise in the future.

Sucker Punch cites the success of recent video game adaptations, like The Last of Us, as part of the reason for pursuing a movie adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima. Apart from the revenue generated by the movie alone, TV and film adaptions often draw players back to the game and could even introduce new consumers to the game series.

Of note is that Ghost of Yōtei takes place over 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, so it's not a direct sequel, rather a spiritual successor. It also looks like any other games in the series will also follow different characters, possibly also throughout different eras in Japanese history. Sucker Punch does, however, explicitly say that the Ghost games are "about transporting the player to the romance and beauty of feudal Japan," meaning players can expect similar aesthetics and themes from the upcoming games in the franchise.

I seem to recall how Sins of a Solar Empire was supposed to become a multimedia franchise; I don't think that one panned out.

Videogame settings and stories in other contexts and format are tricky. The more successful ones I know of are either themselves based on something else (LotR), or imagined for such in the first place, from the ground up (Pokémon).

Though I guess there might well be interest in more stuff set in feudal Japan, franchise or not.

Dune disagrees ;) But yeah, gonna be interesting
Dune is a series of books bro. The games are made after them, just like the movies and tv series.

I loved Ghost of Tsushima so I'll definitely be getting this one, probably on PS5 Pro :D
I couldn't finish the first one. Gameplay became extremely boring and repetitive.
Felt exactly like another Assassins Creed or FarCry game. Starts good, then gradually becomes overly repetitive and boring af.

I never felt that. I felt that there was enough variety of locations, activities and enemies. And while the fox dens and roaming patrols were very similar the shrines and side quests were all unique. I not only finished the game but started NG+ too.
And any moment i felt like the game could become repetitive they mixed it up with the main story.
I especially enjoyed the mythic tales.

Aherm. Good point lol
Interesting isn't it? I mean most times when they adapt a book to film or game it is at least fine. When movies got adapted to videogames is a 50-50 but when videogames were adapted to film it's 90% a shitshow. It's like Hollywood has sworn revenge for games can make 10x more in the first week than a movie in it's entire run.
