EoL yet to build an affordable AMD PC you still gotta build on AM4. I know there are other non EoL AM4 CPUs but EoL is coming for all of them. I'm still running my 5800X and I just built a 5800X system for a customer. Building an equivalent AM5 system would have cost him quite a bit more. Oh and both of them are not 3D cache models.

Not quite true, the 5800X3D is matched pretty closely by a Ryzen7 7700, which is a relatively cheap CPU.

There are plenty of affordable B650 motherboards. Over here £110 gets you an mATX board with VRM heatsinks capable of handling the 230W PPT of Ryzen 9 CPUs, and they're hugely overkill for the little "65W" 7700 which is probably best set to about a 115-125W PPT for the best balance of performance and ease of cooling.

DDR5-6000 EXPO kits are much, much cheaper than they used to be. Whilst it's true DDR4 is cheaper still, you do save money on the CPU with a 7700 so that neatly offsets the slightly more expensive RAM. You said "affordable, so we're only talking 16 or 32GB kits which is a $/£/€15-30 difference between DDR4-3600 and DDR5-6000.

The 7800X3D is about 18% faster on average compared to the 5800X3D. So I think the 9800X3D will easily be 30% faster than the 5800X3D so will be worth the upgrade.

Actually prices are good now.

I paid $350 for my Asus Prime X570 Pro motherboard in 2019 The X670E version of this board I just saw on sale last week for $325.

And a 32GB kit of DDR5 6000 is like $170 I paid way more for my B-die kit 4x8 DDR4 3200 CL14.

So I intend to flip my current Board, Ram, CPU which should cut that upgrade cost in half.

If I sell all 3 of those for $600 that covers new motherboard and ram. That just leaves the 9800X3D cpu.

I picked up my 5800X3d in 2022 before the release of AM5 and the 9xxx series and its been an incredible processor thus far.

I figure I'll wait till AMD is on the cusp of releasing AM6 and snag one of those RAM/mobo/CPU used bundles for $300 off ebay with the last AM5 x3D processor that gets released and then ride that for another 3-4 years.

Got one second hand for 220 a month ago. Very cool and low power chip compared to oc 1600 I had before. Keep my b350 machine good for another 5 years at least,

This. I am always better off selling my old GPU and getting a better one to play at 1440p instead of sinking money into a small actual upgrade in CPU gaming performance at the cost of a whole new platform.

You also need to look at single threaded performance from Zen 3 to 5 and just not GPU bottlenecked resolution unless 100% of your usage on a computer is just playing games.

Fake news you can get one for $316 on Amazon.com. only reason for shortage of x3d chips is because high demand low stock and priority production for the 9000x3d chips. Stocks will comeback to as normal when 9000x3d stocks are plentiful.

For those of us that don't live and breathe games, the 9800X3D will kick the crap out of the 5800X3D/7800X3D for productivity. Heck, 5800X is bottom of the table in most benchmarks these days and X3D is even slower (non-gaming). 9800X3D is going to be faster than 9700X it appears in productivity with 5.2GHz all core clocks. My 5800X can do 4.5GHz max.

4.5 to 4.6 is about the speed I use to see all core on my 5800X

It would do 5.05Ghz single though with PBO.

Platform costs are completely relevant to where you shop. From where I am, platform costs for AM4 compared to AM5 are about equal at the time of writing this & that's AM5 with a 12 threaded APU & low end DDR5 kit on a B650 chipset board.
To those who complain about high costs with DDR5 based rigs, do shop around there are always deals & specials going on almost 24/7 these days.

That is the retailers fault, not the dev/manufacturer, stop blaming a company for discontinuing ddr4 platform when ddr5 is in full swing.

When parts are limited supply after being discontinued the gouging by retailers begins. I still see bnib pc parts from 10+ years ago still having a $350+ tag.

Many workloads with a working set size larger will still benefit if they're memory bandwidth or latency constrained. More cache reduces main memory access in almost all workloads.

Have been using a 5800x3d for about two years now. Very happy with how it performs especially with it undervolted. Was just starting to consider upgrading to AM5 with the 7800x3d which was available with a cpu/motherboard/ram combo at the time for 499 usd from Microcenter when the price went through the roof and now the same combo costs like 300 dollars more.

Merely highlighting some of the outliers among those that benefited more from the additional cache over the non-X3D version, but sure.
