I'm honestly surprised it didn't happen much sooner.
You would think the last mild supply chain problem (~2016) turning every other statement of work into a sitting duck would be the writing on the wall.
Guess it took a scamdemic shutting down the whole planet for people at the helm to learn how to read. Better late than never.

Pretty sad there are those pissing on this news. I'm not even from the US and I think it's great they achieved and surpassed yield parity.

I'll raise a glass to the TSMC workers in Arizona.

News exists for a reason. Lets not be naive here. Im sure theyre doing great work. But this news isnt about workers at all. Its about TSMC performance, its about the partnership success and it serves to tell the public all is well. Shareholders like it too. In addition 4% is not verifiable. The fab's working. Okay. It better!

This is a pure marketing/US PR stunt. TSMC themselves admitted that they couldn't find anywhere near enough qualified staff in the US capable of working in the fab and had to fly in their best engineers/production staff from Taiwan to make this happen.

That's nobody's fault except Intel's. Pat failed to hit milestones that he himself agreed to as a condition on getting the CHIPS act money, so he gets zilch. This is to avoid him misappropriating the money and using it for stock buybacks, management bonuses or investing in more AI firms in China -- which Intel have been infamously doing for a while now. When he hits the milestones agreed, he'll get his money.

Its not going to matter. When China is your main customer and your best customer is moving internally for sourcing products, who are you going to sell you high end stuff to? If your production costs cant compete and the competition is catching at an accelerated rate, then its almost game over.
