Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment expands the PlayStation 5 (PS5) family of products with the release of the new PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) console - the company's most advanced and innovative gaming console to date. PlayStation 5 Pro was designed with deeply engaged players and game creators in mind and includes key performance features that allow games to run with higher fidelity graphics at smoother frame rates.

"With PlayStation 5 Pro, we wanted to make sure that the most dedicated gamers, as well as game creators, could utilize the most advanced console technology, taking the PlayStation 5 experience even farther," said Hideaki Nishino, CEO Platform Business Group, Sony Interactive Entertainment. "This is our most advanced PlayStation to date, and it gives our community of players the opportunity to experience games the way that developers intended for them to be. Players will be thrilled with how this console enhances some of their favorite titles, while opening avenues to discover new ones."

  • Upgraded GPU: 67% more Compute Units than the current PlayStation 5 console and 28% faster memory enabling up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: Providing more dynamic reflection and refraction of light allowing the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PlayStation 5 console.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: Introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

Game creators have embraced the latest technology from PlayStation 5 Pro, and several games will be upgraded with free PS5 Pro Enhanced software updates to take advantage of the console's features including: Alan Wake 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, F1 24, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Metal Gear Solid Delta, No Man's Sky, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Last of Us Part I, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and many more.

The PlayStation 5 Pro console is available now at a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY (including tax). It will include a 2 TB solid state drive, a DualSense wireless controller, and a copy of Astro's Playroom pre-installed in every PlayStation 5 Pro purchase. PlayStation 5 Pro also launches with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories supporting this standard.

Remind me - are we expecting to see AMD's newest RT hardware within this that's going to be part of the RX 8000 range?

It’s RDNA3
1730982468611.png

Is it though? If this was RDNA3 we would see more TF due to FP32 support.

But yeah, I watched short segment of DF video yesterday and they were like "With PS5 Pro we see a massive boost to 55 fps in X title" and I nearly died laughing.

Can't even lock to 60 in Elden Ring when running performance mode.

RDNA3 it isn't.

How do you know it's RDNA 2 still? More like a customized mobile RX 7800M with improved RT tech. Honestly no one knows, unless you're Sony/AMD engineers.

PS5 - RDNA2, 10.3 TFLOPS peak
PS5 Pro - RDNA3, 16.7 TFLOPS peak
RX 8000 is based on RDNA4.

RDNA4 is expected to be the latest iteration of RDNAx. After that, RDNA4 and CDNA3 will receive a common successor in the form of UDNA.

This seems likely a CPU bottleneck, pairing a slow Zen 2 (downclocked 3700X) with that will end up being an issue for some games. Good for consoles, but not great performance compared to PC. I'll be sticking with PC as always.
Except even 2700x desktop PCs can outperform this steaming turd. Not even 60 FPS? cmon man, thats ridiculous out of a $700 console refresh. I've been saying for awhile that rDNA3 was an architectural disappointment that brought almost nothing, and the PS5 pro would line up with that expectation.

How do you know it's RDNA 2 still? More like a customized mobile RX 7800M with improved RT tech. Honestly no one knows, unless you're Sony/AMD engineers.
According to Tweaktown, the RT bits are from rDNA4

If that is true, holy HELL AMD is screwing up. rDNA3 was already a major disappointment in RT. WTF are radeon group doing exactly?

Just hope the next PS gets at least 16 zen6(c?) cores & 128GB lpddr6x "unified" memory o_O
Not gonna happen, that's just silly.

32GB is far more likely, or maybe 24GB. 128GB is useless for current hardware.

Could be completely wrong, but I recall reading that it does borrow from RDNA4, but what exactly, was not disclosed.

About RDNA3, one fact seems to suck if true, no devs have coded anything to take advantage of its dual execution architecture.

My god what a sad, sad release this is
'come let's upgrade our consoles to 3 year old (lower) high end and offer no extra games'
Sony has lost the plot, this is probably by far the laziest mid gen console update they have ever done. Its not smaller, its barely better, it costs more. Lel.

Not gonna happen, that's just silly.

32GB is far more likely, or maybe 24GB. 128GB is useless for current hardware.
24GB tops
And GPU no higher than 7900XT. Maybe XTX, but I think that's a real stretch. After all, RDNA4 is not going to go much higher either. AMD's wiggle room is limited. But a lot can happen in 2-3 years, AMD might well lose their bid on the PS6.

percentage wise, 42FPS > 55FPS is like a 32% boost. people can spend way more, on way less meaningful improvements.

The actual performance of the PS5 Pro doesn't bother me much for RNDA4. The memory bandwidth didn't increase as much as the CU count. the CPU is still the same and many game are CPU limited (even more with RT) and we don't know the clock they are achieving on the GPU.

The rumors are that it use RDNA3 Compute units with RDNA4 Ray tracing units. In the end if that is the case, that is a hybrid design and who know what sacrifice they had to made to achieve that. (why not just full RNDA4?) Also i find a bit strange that they do not count the dual issue data for the compute units. On one side it may not support it, or it may, but sony choose that it just artificially increased the Tflops numbers.

The second option is not impossible, but that is surprising when you are in numbers wars. that might be the real truth why they went for the lower number.

anyway, the real reason to be worried about RDNA 4 is the fact they aren't making a flagship class this time.

Apparently the ray tracing aspects of this is decent in Alan wake and the spooderman game. But otherwise, its a pathetic upgrade for an abysmal price.

Gonna get 2

Well I'm glad that there is consensus.
Will be interesting to see if there are quality improvements to RT output instead of just performance...

not gonna happen… (just pay the tab and get one, the red controller looks really good)

but swapping the sticks for hall-effect is an “open-heat surgery” (and not really for the “ faint of heart “, but the controller is “broken“ so what is the worst that can happen? deal), but if you have a vacuum-aided desoldering station It is easier (I wrecked my controller doing the “open-heat surgery” thing using a solder-sucker.
i was do inpatient to find the solderwick, or rebuy it)
so either get the solderwick, or a desoldering station.
(the hall sticks are about 20 on aliexpress)
