So here in Europe there are almost no Strix point notebooks available. Asus has a few models but they start at 1500€ and that's more than I'm willing to spend for a notebook as I'm looking for sub 1000€ models. Does anyone know when notebooks from other manufacturers are going to be available or when the general availability of Strix point will be?

AMD laptop availability since 6000 Rembrandt has always been not as front-loaded as Intel. ie. not all designs are ready to go and ready to ship en masse on launch day.

If it's sub-1000eur you want, you might be waiting a while. AMD so far hasn't shown any indication it's willing to depart from its established strategy for the last 3 generations to market its APUs in the premium segment only.

Best bet might be keeping an eye on some Lenovo designs to see if anything pops up, but even Yogas are not likely to hit that price point if they feature Strix.

So far I haven't heard of any big new designs featuring Strix except ProArt, and that's definitely not within that price range.

Also, Strix has not even had anything below Ryzen 7 announced yet. Which only further reinforces their existing product strategy. Hurry up and wait, I guess.

could this be why it's hard to find ryzen in biz class laptops??

How long will Strix point be ASUS only?

I don't know, but I don't think they will be much faster than current Phoenix or Hawk point. It's probably not worth waiting for something lower than a 10 core Strix point. There's also no reason for the current ones to go down in price.

Lenovo has quite a few Thinkpads with Ryzen; they don't have Strix Point yet.

Thanks to more cores, Strix Point is appreciably faster than Phoenix Point for multithreaded workloads and the iGPU seems to be significantly faster as well. Single threaded performance also sees an increase.

Right, but we were talking about something slower than the current models (10-12 cores), which I interpreted as 8 cores. If the 12 core runs 35 % faster than a Phoenix while having 50 % more cores (two kinds), that's not an improvement, and maybe a bit like what we're witnessing with the new desktop CPU's.
Edit: It wouldn't be an improvement for 8 cores.

That's a good point; we'll have to wait and see how the 8 core SKUs perform. That 8% figure covers all TDPs so it is useless from the perspective of comparing efficiency. Another table in the Notebookcheck review shows much better performance compared to Zen 4 at the same TDP. I hope the 8 core SKUs keep the regular Zen 5 core count at 4.

Yeah, it's hard to tell if core count or architecture is mostly behind that improvement, but given desktop benchmarks from yesterday I'm leaning towards core count. More cores will cost a lot more in these laptops, unfortunately, regardless of TDP.

I think it's a mix of both, but probably weighted more towards the higher core count. It's a much bigger die than Phoenix or Hawk point, but it also has a lot more silicon for other blocks besides the CPU.

If the 9700X is 9% faster than a 7700 (same TDP) in Cinebench, then there is no point in waiting for a newer 8 core Zen5 model than Phoenix or Hawk point IMO. They will be more expensive anyway, with fewer CU's than the 365.

That's the thing, we won't be seeing any models with less than 10 cores from this die, too much waste.

A great gaming APU here would be 8 cores maxmum, but those will never come with maxed out graphics. Too bad.

I think you're right. They might continue using Zen 4 for the 6 and 8 core laptop SKUs. It's a pity; in many ways, a beefed up APU with the same L3 cache per core as the 9700X would be preferable to the 9700X or 9600X as it would have lower idle power draw which is the biggest drawback of the separate IO die.

Maybe, but AMD has been eager to produce all Zen versions simultaneously for mobile in the past, so a 6 core Zen 5 wouldn't surprise me, I just don't think it's worth waiting for.

I'm still waiting for Strix point notebooks to become available. Still only Asus has them. Should I wait for arrow lake which is coming out soon?

Is there really another choice other than to keep waiting? If the existing few designs are not what you actually want.

Hard to say how Lunar Lake will perform or what new designs it will bring, but at least most of its products will at least launch on launch day.

I've noticed that lunar lake notebooks are becoming available. Looks like I won't need to wait much more until Strix point or lunar lake fall under 1000EUR.

That's not a given for Strix point, as there are only premium APU models. You know, laptop brands wants to sell lower priced models as well.
An analogy would be that an 8 core desktop Ryzen have a higher launch price now than 6 years ago (ignoring inflation, as that's not my point), despite 16 core models are available.

The reason is of course that 16 core models appeared at a higher price segment, just like Strix point. The 16 cores didn't get the price of the 8 core, and the 8 core didn't drop to €200 like one scottish rumour maker said. :D

I see only two brands so far, and with current prices starting at €1400, I seriously don't see why the latest and fastest from AMD would drop 40% all of a sudden, it's brand new.

But then again we don't know how Lunar sales will affect Strix sales..

If anyone wants faster graphics than a Phoenix/Hawk point (12 CU), but aren't prepared to pay up for a Strix point HX 370 (16 CU), I can tell you that it doesn't seem to be a reason to wait.

The upcoming midrange APU only got 8 CU, probably making it slower than a Rembrandt (12 CU). Yeah, the 6000 series. Yup, cut the 890M in half and you're still way below the 680M (Rembrandt) in performance. But hey, at least you get that sweet NPU!

It's either the HX 370 or something older. Don't bother with the HX 365 (880M) unless the price is low, as it doesn't seem to have faster graphics than Phoenix/Hawk point (780M).

What do you people think? I'm ready to spend 1200€.

The Zenbook S16 is not fast compared to previous models (I'm of course looking at the 7840U, see below), and it looks a lot like the one you picked. Then again, performance differs between models.
Your model runs probably slower because it's so light, making it power or heat starved, just like the Asus review model.

Given the benchmarks, either go for someting 8 core: https://geizhals.eu/?cat=nb&xf=12822_8~525_ASUS~9690_Hawk+Point~9690_Phoenix&sort=p#productlist

Or, pick a model with a 365 CPU that actually works as expected. 50 % faster with the same CPU is insane, with minimal differences in size and weight.
You can also see how the 10 core Yoga Pro 7 (365) also beats that 12 core Zenbook S16 (370, just below in both graphs), which is a joke. Asus design doesn't work well.

Even a Core Ultra 155H is a better choice lol..
