NVIDIA 8800 GX2 to Re-try Quad SLI?

When NVIDIA Released the GeForce 7950GX2, it was snatched up by hardware enthusiasts hoping to get their hands on the first quad-GPU solution ever. The result was buggy, glitched, and not too much better than a dual card solution. However, times have changed, and technology has improved. NVIDIA is touting Triple SLI, while AMD's Crossfire X allows for four independent graphics cards to run in one system. To counter the upcoming AMD HD 3870X2, NVIDIA may be working on re-visiting Quad SLI the same way they did last time: by sandwiching two PCBs into one physical card, eliminating the possibility of replacing stock cooling.

there is, but since nvidia cant do oct core gpu systems like what amd's serving up in january i think, they're resorting to going back to the buggy and glitchy and crappy designs for something smiliar to the 7950x2 which is 2 7900m gpus on one pcb. from this, they'd get a hex core sli+CFX, which is what they'd need to beat the oct core CFX that amd's got

I can see why they're releasing the 8800 GX2, otherwise 3DMark whores will all go for Quad HD 3XXX setups.

I had a eVGA 7950GX2 card and it work great back then, but ran really hot like a 8800GTX card . But if you put 2 eVGA 7950GX2 for SLI it had problems with drivers. So I never bought a second card do to there bad SLI support. :mad:

It all depends if the AMD/ATI crossover beats the Nvidia SLI setup.. Nvidia has to be at the top in there eyes. If people think AMD/ATI is at top they would leave and buy there setup vs the Nvidia SLI setup..

well for 3dmark and stuff, i think that amd will eventually overpower nvidia just cause their architecture is better. CFX allows users to shove 4 cards into one system already, and the structure it designed so that with a new chipset, they can keep adding more and more pci x16 slots, therefore easily increasing the amount of cards, and so with a quad care rig avaliable atm, where you can do an oct cored system once the 38xx X2's come out, nvidia is still stuck with triple sli, so if amd can get performance, the fact that they can support more cards, etc. will let amd win this one.

7900gx2 and 7950gx2 both existed. The latter being the only one available for retail purchase.
