Hey glorious people of the forums! I found myself dissasembling my personal PS4 since I noticed it was getting a bit dusty after 6-7 years of continuous use (lol). Everything was going smoothly until I realized the bottom half wouldn't budge open, so looking back at some guide pictures, I noticed that there are several rivets??? I think or just plasticy bits where screws should be. I know that this is probably a dead end already but what should I do? I really want to clean the old guy he did so much for me. I'll try to attach some pics in the bottom. Anyways any help is appreciated!! Thnx guyyssss :p

I take it's still working.

Electronic grade Canned air duster is my suggestion so you don't break it. Not an air compressor.

Keep in mind, do not shake the can, also do not flip the can upside down as the liquidied contents can be too cold that you could damage the components in that expensive hardware

So, not technically a rivet. The plastic housing has a tube formation that comes up, and initially acts as a guide to the placement of the metal shroud. They take a hot metal pin, and press downward on the tube. The edges fold outward, creating an expanded "head" that melts down onto the metal shroud and forms a mechanical bond.

The way to remove this is simply to drill it out. There's a few mils of plastic at most holding it on. To replace you'll just need a plastic-metal adhesive applied around that area to replace the mechanical bond. You could get teeny little metal rivets, but prepping the case for the rivets is a nightmare. The reason that they moved away from adhesives or proper mechanical fasteners was the cost. The use of small tubular protrusions is literally pennies, while a proper mechanical connection or adhesive can be three to ten times as much easily.

All of this said...the thing isn't exactly showing a huge amount of dirt build-up. The canned air suggestion is probably more than enough, and won't wind up being an adventure to get another 5-7 years of normal performance from.

I think ifixit has a teardown… use that to get past the “rivets”. and many other sites have teardowns.

Not everyone should touch a drill though, more damage can ensue

Which model that is? I didn't see those with my PAL Slim (CUH-2016B) when I cleaned and repasted it

edit: Or at least if there were those, they didn't affect the teardown.

Do not worry; I had my fair share of drilling experience. but I think ill chill out, don't wanna go this far for cleaning, probably will stick with compressed air.

IKR?! it is a slim, and i think its some localized thing. Maybe it was something the store requested or something??? Idk.
