If you undervolt the GPU, it will run cooler, your fans won't ramp up so much, which will result in less airflow to the VRAM. Unless you make a custom fan curve, it's not a good idea, imo.

Powercolor also has PTM7950 on their cards, and my VRAM runs at 90 ˚C under load. It's definitely not a TIM issue.
Based on the fact that everybody has their VRAM running hot on their cards, I'm starting to think that it's normal and by design.

Undervolting should also reduce heat, but if the vram is made to run over 85°C by design it's a bad design when Micron says "0C to +95C"

Source: https://www.micron.com/products/memory/graphics-memory/gddr6

Sadly Hynix doesn't talk about operational temps only that they are 15-20% more energy efficient per chip compared to GDDR5 :banghead:

But asking GPT it do say that "Hynix GDDR6 memory is generally specified as -40°C to 95°C." but it do fail to give me the source which is annoying.

But still running about 85~86°C I wouldn't overclock really because these temps are handled better, and with a boost of 3122MHz according to GPU-Z 2.64.0 I am really happy with the performance.

Sorry for all the OT in the RX 9000 series owner club.

Just need to point out that people should look at their temps and try to control them so their cards doesn't crash or die with memory failure because they can run a but hot.

I am excited to see my summer temps if I need to add a fan to the side of my card or if it will stay the same.

Undervolting only reduces heat on the GPU, not the VRAM. A cooler GPU will result in a slower fan speed, which results in less airflow to the VRAM.

Does Micron state a hotspot or edge temperature? Which one do we see in software? My guess (based on previous gen Radeon cards) is that Micron's data is edge temp, but we see junction temp in software.

Joined just to share that I too was lucky enough to get a card. Newegg was a joke and kept crashing. I did opt to spend more because i couldnt get an MSRP model. I was aiming for a XT but settled for getting a Powercolor Red Devil 9070. Paid 659 on Amazon. I seen no MSRP models on Amazon. The only options left on Newegg were all white ones which doesnt work for my case. Or a few of the pricier models of XT. Upgraded from a 3070. Only playing at 1440 and so far the 9070 has been a decent upgrade. Did have to change my link speed from auto to 4 in order to get it to post. Vram gets hot! Even with custom fan curve.

Benchmark Scores It's over 9000!
Sorry for all the OT in the RX 9000 series owner club.
We're the very first owners of these cards after reviewers, I don't think it's OT at all, actually I'm a bit obsessed with temperatures myself. I guess it's a bad habit I picked up from years of watercooling, but that's a different story  ... so I can understand these kind of worries, np at all, at the end the club is for a more relaxed conversation as well.

VRAM temps caught my attention when I first saw the review results. And yeah, they’re technically within spec, maybe a bit higher this generation, but not far off from what you see on the 7900 XT/XTX or even some NVIDIA models. As you mentioned, the max operating temp for GDDR6 should be around 95°C, and if I’m not mistaken, the junction max is 105°C. I'm no expert, but I assume clocks would start throttling once they hit those limits. No test I've seen goes over 92°C, which isn't great, but also not terrible, it’s still about ~5% below the spec limit. In my case, I was hitting around 82–84°C, so roughly 15% below the max.

A few thoughts/speculations:
  • Looking at internal PCB shots, it seems like on this AMD generation, the memory chips are packed pretty tightly and surrounded by other components, which could cause some residual heat buildup.
  • Maybe they’re just pushing GDDR6 closer to its limits, and this is the "safe max" they can offer without damaging cards during a "reasonable" amount of years
I really hope this is intentional and safe by design, not an actual issue. And if it turns out to be the latter, hopefully they can address it with a software fix through a driver or VBIOS update, rather than letting cards overheat.

Does Micron state a hotspot or edge temperature? Which one do we see in software? My guess (based on previous gen Radeon cards) is that Micron's data is edge temp, but we see junction temp in software.
TBH, I didn't activate the "game overlay" in this iteration, I think Adrenalin is spotting for the real VRAM temperature, not the junction. Rest of monitoring programs report just one memory temperature from what I've seen, and maybe it's reporting the junction one as you mention. Worth to take a look.

I saw this post by UNIKO's Hardware on Twitter talking about Hynix and references the RX 7900 GRE with Samsung memory also running at 84°C because Samsung runs them at 1.35v and not 1.2v

I follow UNIKO's Hardware because they post interesting things also this, but I also saw yesterday that the latest version and beta doesn't fully support RX 9070 / RX 9070 XT so I am not sure if HWiNFO can be 100% trusted, this is why I use Sapphire's Trixx and GPU-Z 0.6.4.

I'm starting to think that it's normal and by design.
If that’s the case, then so be it (similar to some recent Ryzens IIRC). I don't really care that much as long as it's official. Though, it's winter now and soon in my area the ambient temps will hit 30> outside on the daily. We will see how it goes then...

On other note, it's my 1st time with Adrenalin ( not counting 4070 HD which I remember hazily). So far, a bit unimpressed - I miss the old ugly-but-granular Nvidia control panel. Do I really need to make custom resolutions or use windows to change my monitors refresh rate? :/

When the weather is warmer, your GPU will run warmer too, which will increase your fan speed, so you'll probably get similar cooling with a bit more noise.

I can't remember (I'm on Linux now - there's no Adrenalin here), but as far as I recall, you'll need Windows for that. Right click on the desktop, and you're there. :)

I picked up the PowerColor Hellstone Edition  9070 XT on launch day at an Atlanta Microcenter. I'm hoping to get it installed tomorrow to see how it performs vs my 6800 XT. It should be a nice bump.
That would be great, i'd appreciate it very much if you did and posted the results here.

That makes me think I was right. The 88-90 ˚C we're seeing is the memory hotspot - Micron's 95 ˚C max is edge temp. Otherwise there wouldn't be any 108 ˚C limit - the VRAM would cook long before reaching it.

How much owners paid for theirs 9070 and xt?

Prices in my country are absurd... over 900€. Checked amazon DE and same there. Sad.

I think this could be an interesting topic as well, at least to have some perspective. As a matter of fact I was going to ask these a general club question for the owners, so kinda thanks for anticipating it, in the other hand it's a sad story, indeed.

I paid 634,99 EUR (VAT and Shipping included) for my Sapphire Pulse RX 9070 at Spain, also on launch day as @AusWolf, or better said, on launch first-hour.

It would be nice to have a comparative table with the paid price, date and country of purchase, if you'd like. WDYT?

PS: Regarding VRAM stuff I have some findings as well, I'll post them later but I checked same things as you @Shou Miko but in OCCT monitoring, I saw the sensor regarding percentages to VRAM temp in a similar spot, I'll post my results later but it's possible that as some of you stated it's reporting the junction temperature.

I'll be playing the waiting game, and only IF AMD releases the rumored RX 9070 XTX. While the RX 9070 XT performs pretty well, especially in RT games, my RX 7900 XTX holds its own against it, so I see no reason to go with 'sidegrade'. Besides, with the price gouging in my neck of the woods, ~750USD to 970USD - it makes no sense to go rushing in. Learned that the hard way with my RX 7900 XTX ....

Unless you consider the overclocked, 340 W, 3x8-pin models the XTX.

Normally, I'd be playing the waiting game too, but reading news about potential price hikes after launch made me jump the gun. Looking at prices now, I'm glad I did. If someone had told me a couple years ago that one day I would buy a GPU on launch day, I would have giggled, and if someone had told me that I'd actually save money doing so, I would have laughed my pants off. Strange times! :ohwell:

Maybe we're overthinking it.
Certainly we are  I got the same results as @Shou Miko in terms of percentage, and it clearly shows a max of 108°C, so let's all breathe.

It's still pretty unclear what they’re planning to release besides the 9060 series. I’ve seen rumors about a 9080 XT, and now you’re mentioning a 9070 XTX, so who knows. They also said they were stepping away from the high-end segment this generation, but if that’s as reliable as the promise to stick to MSRP...

As I mentioned a few posts ago, I’m going to create a table that reflect the owners, the model and brand we have, how much we paid for the card, and if possible, the store and country where we got it from. Please report missing/wrong data whenever is possible, thanks for your cooperation!

PS: If some staff member can give me access to edit the first post to reflect this, it would be great, just if it's possible, thanks so much in advance!

The only thing officially hinted at (so far) is the 9060 series. The rest is internet gossip.

That's awesome!

I think it would also be worth noting the date of purchase, so we can see how much prices got hiked in the end.

@SirKeldon Here are my corrections for you. Nice idea, by the way.
The model is Red Devil. I'm calling it the HellStone because of the GN video making fun of marketing. It has a giant RGB "HellStone" on the end of the card.
I paid $789 usd, plus 6% local sales tax.

Sorry for the potato cam pic.

I am going to live vicariously through all of you who got a 9070XT. Tried to get one launch day but Newegg cancelled my order. Now it's just a waiting game and responding to in-stock alerts fast enough, which I failed at yesterday

@SirKeldon 9070XT Gigabyte Gaming OC - ~700$ (this is a local MSRP, there were no cheaper models available anywhere) - not sure about VAT, I guess already in - Taiwan / Taipei/ CoolPC real world store

I still haven't had time to test it properly, as in play a recent game with PT for an hour or two, but fired up RE4 for 10 minutes today and max VRAM temp was 92C :/
