The ICY DOCK CP146 is a revolutionary mobile rack that transforms unused PCIe panel space into high-speed removable M.2 NVMe SSD bay (2230/2242/2260/2280). Unlike traditional PCIe adapters, the CP146 allows users to install M.2 NVMe SSDs without occupying any PCIe slots. Many modern system chassis include PCIe panel areas with no corresponding PCIe slots underneath—perfect for upgrading with the CP146.

With its SlimSAS 4i interface, the CP146 supports PCIe 4.0 x4 bandwidth, delivering up to 64 Gbps transfer speeds. The tool-free removable SSD tray streamlines SSD installation and replacement, making it ideal for users who prioritize both functionality and convenience.

Tool-Free SSD Tray for Easy Maintenance
Setting the CP146 apart from other adapters is its removable SSD tray, allowing users to install and replace M.2 NVMe SSDs effortlessly. The tool-free design eliminates the need for screws or additional tools, simplifying maintenance and upgrades. This makes the CP146 an excellent choice for systems requiring frequent SSD changes or daily backups.

Dual Brackets for Full Chassis Compatibility
The CP146 includes both low-profile and full-height PCIe brackets, ensuring compatibility with slim systems and standard ATX chassis. This versatility allows the CP146 to meet the needs of a wide range of applications, from edge computing to enterprise servers.

Support 1x M.2 NVMe SSD & Tool-less SSD Installation
Thanks to the tool-less SSD installation design, installing the M.2 NVMe SSD into the CP146 has never been easier. First, position the M.2 SSD mounting clip into the semicircular notch above the screw hole, then place both the M.2 NVMe SSD and the mounting clip onto the tray. Next, apply the thermal pad and reattach the heatsink lid to complete the installation. The entire process takes less than 60 seconds, allowing you to install or remove the SSD without unmounting the CP146 from the PCIe slot.

Optimized Thermal Management
The CP146 is equipped with an aluminium heatsink lid and an included thermal pad to efficiently dissipate heat from the M.2 NVMe SSD, ensuring stable performance even under intensive PCIe 4.0 workloads. This prevents thermal throttling and maximizes data throughput. The design effectively channels airflow to keep the M.2 NVMe SSD cool, ensuring reliable performance during heavy data transfers.

Flexible SlimSAS Host Connectivity
The CP146 connects to your system using the SlimSAS 4i interface, making it compatible with onboard motherboard ports or add-on NVMe PCIe adapter cards. For systems without a SlimSAS 4i interface, ICY DOCK offers NVMe conversion cables to bridge the gap and ensure seamless connectivity. This flexibility allows users to integrate the CP146 into a variety of setups, whether for professional or personal use.

There were at least 2 very similar products - one was an M.2 card connected to the PCIE slot and the other was a variant of that with 2 drives

It's different; it's a "concept product" from Icy Dock, a different approach without involving any PCIe slots "CP146 is a Concept Product based on customer suggestions. While not yet scheduled for release, with sufficient customer support and detailed feedback, we aim to bring it to market. Your insights are crucial in shaping this product and confirming market demand."

If that's true then this part of specification seems out of place:

Drive Bay: 1x PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 x4 / x8 / x16 expansion slot
