Plus they know they can make more margin on NVIDIA products.
Yea there’s so much margin on a few thousand of each model that it’s a no brainer for companies like EVGA or MSI.

Oh wait…

The last good Radeon GPU they made was the R9 390X Gaming, half assed models since then.

45? I feel like that was too much. With 15 total RX 6000 GPU models around (from the RX 6300 to the RX 6950 XT), that would mean an average of three different variants per GPU model. Ridiculous.
Definitely self made problem.

Still I would wonder any if back room deals were done...

Intel used to do lots of that.

They are getting what they asked for in Nvidia's hands.

It's a major loss for AMD.
I think Gigabyte and ASUS are the only two remaining who make both AMD and Nvidia graphics cards. I wonder who could be pressuring them...
It's not much of a loss considering MSI made absolutely terrible cards by reusing nvidia coolers and not even checking gaps correctly. It would then look bad on AMD when they had nothing to do with it. If anything, good riddance and we will actually see decent cards from all vendors this time around.

We just need some XOC models now but I guess we'll have to wait till next gen

They are just another gpp corp anyway, their mishandling of the RX 5700 series made me realize MSI is a garbage company.

I don’t think this is a terrible move. Clearly the vast majority of their sales is coming from nVidia, and for any AIB to have to spend R&D money, it needs to pay off. It doesn’t sound like they’ll be missed much from the Radeon crowd anyways.

It's their loss, not for the buyer though, there are plenty of AMD AIB's that make much better cards.
MSI's AMD cards were overpriced anyway, too many cards with bad build quality or re-using Nvidia coolers.

They are investing in the new AMD AI Max CPU's which have high power Radeon graphics built-in that will render separate GPU's unnecessary.

Factually incorrect. As close as the Radeon 290x generation MSI had equivalent/superior products for AMD and Nvidia.

I was specifically answering to the claim that MSI started to ignore AMD after the death of the CEO in 2020, I never implied that it was always the case ;) I said "before" not "always".

Even though Ryzen was far more competitive than bulldozer, and ITX was getting more popular, they never bothered with a proper ITX flagship for AMD. And the RX 6000 was already getting shipped when their CEO was alive

I think we all know it's Nvidia, their anti-competitive practices are entirely blatant at this point. They didn't even allow MSI, Gigabyte, and ASUS to have their premium SKUs on AMD last gen at all either.

Plus they know they can make more margin on NVIDIA products.

This is an unproven assumption.

It's pretty typical for a company to have products with a range of different margins and they are all important to maximizing revenue. You wouldn't just cede a portion of the market to competitors unless there's something else being put into the balance.

I don’t think this is a terrible move. Clearly the vast majority of their sales is coming from nVidia, and for any AIB to have to spend R&D money, it needs to pay off. It doesn’t sound like they’ll be missed much from the Radeon crowd anyways.

It's crazy that you are implying that AMD sales aren't covering the minimal R&D costs associated with adapting their designs to AMD GPUs, most of that cost is already sunk in their Nvidia cards to begin with. The amount attributable to AMD adaptations is likely miniscule.

Every other board partner doesn't seem to have a problem and it's not like MSI has stated that it's unprofitable.

And nothing of value was lost. MSI branded AMD cards were crap. Their 7000 series cards just reused the 6000 series coolers. Something weird is going on with MSI and AMD anyway. The MSI Claw solidified that.

I agree. They put zero effort into custom design. Absolutely awful cards. Their loss.

Nothing weird. AMD does not want to sell silicon to MSI as they are not bothered to put genuine effort into some products such as GPUs and handhelds.

Bit saddened tbh, I've historically had quite the amount of MSI cards.
With how nonpresent they've been in the 7000 series I'd argue they left quite some time ago.
Would've actually coughed up some additional money for a 9070XT lightning, but I think that ship has sailed.

I thought they had announced months ago that MSI was pulling out of selling AMD products? So this to me is not surprising...

Plus in recently MSI products have been sub par across the board. Used to love their motherboards but their quality has gone down while prices have shot up. Their GPU's are not nearly as nice as they used to be across the board for the price. There are alot of brands I would choose anyday of the week over them.

Do you have any proof of this or is it just speculation that R&D costs are “minimal” (and define minimal!)?

We’ve recently seen generations that used recycled cooler designs (from multiple AIBs). While adequate, those designs have tended to underperform in comparison to their peers. If manufacturers are already pinching Pennies by reusing old coolers, I can’t imagine that‘a a positive indicator for any other step of the product lifecycle.

This is good news. We may get amd graphic cards with better build quality. AMD graphic cards need higher build quality so AMd graphic cards will be more considered as a purchase option.

My MSI B550 Gaming EdGE WIFI Am4 mainboard had issues with the intel wlan. Very high overpriced mainboard at the time of purchase.

The MSI 6800 Z Trio came quite late on teh market. I bought it. I was forced to sell it after 3 months. 3 Fan design with nunbearable noise according to the windows 11 amd gpu driver at 35% of the fan curve.
The rgb light strip could not be turned off. Cheap crappy build quality. That MSI card (to make it 100% clear) left a worse impression as the ASROCK 6600XT Challenger 8GB D card I had before. The asrock card I had replaced in the first days because of permanent no zero fan mode and 100% fan spinning.

Compared to my current Powercolor 7800XT hellhound was the MSI mainboard and the MSI 6800 Z trio graphic card bad purchases.

edit: the MSI graphic card was not cheap. I expect certain minimum standards to be met at certain prices over 450€. Especially when others can sell products with proper performance, proper cooling and proper fan noise.

They had the cheapest Radeons in UK and I think most of Europe AND that was on Amazon. Doubt they want to continue that when they can make Nvidia mark ups

Not really, the MSI cards were not well liked for good reason. I don't see it as a major loss for the end consumer at all unless more companies leave.
MSI is the largest OEM PC component manufacturer on the planet. Not a good look to Dell, Lenovo, HP type companies when you lose them.

MSI AMD GPU's were so shitty there was no point for AMD to sell them any chips, MSI made them look bad too many times.
There is no loss to AMD when they have exclusive partner AIB's making better cards like Sapphire, Powercolor, Asrock, and XFX.

After about 4 years of Weekly streams MSI Gaming is no longer doing that. They planned to do a live stream of the 5070 but the reviews seemed to make them rethink that. In a clear sign of hypocrisy they did a livestream of the 9950X3D and told the audience that live streams were going to biweekly. This is the same Company that bucked the Handheld market with Intel in the Claw. Of course it is not bad but in this age of absolutes it was maligned. I remember when MSI made the best QOL MBs and GPUs were bullet proof. The decision to abandon AMD seems foolish with the release of the 9000 GPUs.
