They are not.

But we have seen this in previous round of tarrifs under first Trump administration. Companies just don't dare to raise prices solely in USA, they spread the cost of US tariffs to the whole world, and US customers reward them for that. Fail to do that, and you get singled out as "anti-American", and people call for boycott.

And it doesn't matter where the company is from, or what share of their revenue are US sales.

now what about the rest of the world calls the anti everyone but Americans policy and people call for a boycott?
There isn't a single product where americans can even close to dominating a market in consumption. Actually i can think of one, but that's not transactional.

That's actually not true. The US is an extremely consumerist nation. Taking both India and China as example, the US is their biggest customer, export value-wise. Rivalled only by whole, aggregated blocks of countries.
Hell! Google "World top * consumers" for any product you can think of, and most of the time you'd get the US on top of that list.
Everyone is pissed at Trump's asinine tariffs because it screws up everyone's economy (including the US).

that was not the point, if it's US vs the world, the numbers aren't even close on any product, unless you have some examples.
On the PS5 for example the US doesn't sell more than the rest of the world, not even close, the US bought 39M, the rest of the world 61M

Pissing everyone else to make America happy can backfire. Especially because the rest of the world doesn't have the same purchase power of the US. A increase in 200$ in the US is not that much compared to the rest of the world. Seems like a stupid bussiness decision

I can think of quite a few things they're not anywhere near the top of, like stinky tofu, balut, Asian fishy snacks, surströmming and a few others...

I don't even know what tariffs mean, should finally educate myself. The thing which affects me most is that this also affects the used market.

Last time when I bought a console new, was when the local mall was getting rid of Gameboy Colors, got a new one for 17EUR in 2005.

edit: So it's basically just tax but with a different name. Gotcha.

The US has about 340M people, or about 5% of the world population, but are buying 39% of the PS5s. The story generally repeats itself across all product categories, with the share usually in the range of 25-50% of total world production. This is why the world is pissed.

There's also the secondary problem that the US tariff equation is based only on goods sold, not goods+services. If you do it based on goods+services, the US turns a surplus with pretty much every other country on earth,

Except it's being levied on the exporting nation, but yes, it's a protectionist tax that is meant to reduce import of certain goods from a specific nation or a few nations.
In this case, it's being used in a way that no-one has ever seen before and that's why the stock markets went into meltdown mode last week.

Good
Why the fuck are EMEA and ANZ affected by tariffs for imports to USA?

People will just buy them on holiday at the lower price in other regions?

Be interesting to see if sales collapse, given how bad the overall economic environment is likely to get...

What other regions? Everyone is getting ripped off by 25% instead of just the USA getting ripped off 125%.

You are not wrong, I want to buy some lenses for my camera and I know camera makers have all started to raise their prices(luckily so far only in US leaving rest of the world untouched) and 3rd option really should have been throwing Sony under the bus for being greedy.

Apparently this time around even individual parcel packets are going to be charged with tariffs so not even gray market is spared from the stupidity.

Grey market items can work a bit complicated. Two main things to be considered.

First you have regional distributors willing to let go some of their stock at lower prices. They often buy as many as they can from manufacturers for a deeper discount in bulk orders. If some grey market seller in US is involved then these regional distributors might actually order way more than they can sell to get a better price from Sony, while giving their local components a shortage of stock. So to begin with there can be a big price gap between stock and retail in the US.

Then, they probably can work around import tax a bit by taking the unit apart in some degrees. Used items, parts for services, broken units to be serviced often fall under different category than brand new well-packaged fully-functional merchandise. They can be repackaged inside US and being sold new, used, or refurbished ( whatever you can imagine). Given current differences in import tax rate across the globe, and price gap between retail price and cost (what's discussed above). To operate in this fashion is feasible. This is way easier than working with a camera, which is too complicated.

That's the impurity in the grey word.

Personally, I'd keep an eye out if I were to buy one later this year.

The EU is a collection of states as the US, no borders, it's irrelevant in terms of selling something there, it consumes almost as much. Just add Japan and it's more than the US.

The price hike for the US - justifiable.

For the rest of us - Absolutely not, fuck off, we're sick of subsidizing cheaper prices for the US.

There will be price increase in Japan too or the JP market has a home made PS5 but everywhere else is somehow US made or has parts that touched US soil?
ED: Or this is just a F you Nintendo, the PS5 will cost more than the Switch 2 because the PS5 has a bigger cooler and can't be cheaper than a handheld?

Meant if they keep the price the same in EMEA and elsewhere but massively increase it in the USA, then logically people will smuggle them from other regions in to the USA... Trucks full of PS5 coming in from Canada or Mexico declared as something else... People travel to the US with suitcases full of PS5s, Smuggling, So they increase everywhere to give no incentive for the black market...

he's talking nonsense. Smuggling is a crime and i guess their border is now patrolled by everyone and their moms to stop mexicans from crossing

This far into the lifespan of the console with the "cheaper*" Slim models already available and now the pricing is jumping up... ?

Eh?!

I have no skin in the game after selling my PS5 last year due to lack of use (everything I play is either multi plat (Series X in my case), on PC as well or on Switch thus after letting my PS+ lapse I wasn't looking to spend another £100 just to continue not using it.

*As in presumably cheaper to produce for Sony otherwise why bother.

This really rubs me the wrong way, Americans should not be subsidised by the rest of the world, to cushion them from the policies of their government. They won't have a scintilla of gratitude either, they'll continue to think they're the victims. Ugh.
