The "walkout" moment is a staple of Bethesda Game Studios' titles, and there are few that have stuck with me as much as emerging from the sewer-set tutorial of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. That makes it all the more incredible, 19 years later, to see it in thoroughly modern form in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered—which arrives today. I watch as a newly-built character loads into the wide open world of Cyrodiil (R.I.P. Emperor Septim)—they turn to see the landscape I know so well in new and improved form. Mist wreathes around the top of nearby mountains, seen again in distorted reflections on the wholly reworked water below. A sunrise cuts across the world, casting long shadows across gorgeous new foliage. Behind me, an even more imposing Imperial City stands proudly, blotting out the horizon behind it. And then, we're interrupted by an unscripted attack from a Mud Crab. It might look all-new, but this is Oblivion alright.

Oblivion Remastered—All the Updates
Oblivion Remastered comes to Xbox Series X|S, PC (via Steam and the Xbox App for Windows PC) and PlayStation 5. It's also available day one with Game Pass and, with Xbox Play Anywhere, one purchase on an Xbox platform means you can play on Xbox consoles, Windows PC, and cloud with full cross-entitlements and cross-saves. Designed in co-operation with the remaster specialists at Virtuos, Oblivion Remastered keeps the core of the original game intact (and includes the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles expansions), but drapes it in an incredible new visual style, powered by Unreal Engine 5. Alongside 4K resolution, 60 frames per second performance, all-new textures, lighting effects, and landscape improvements, the game also updates everything from character, spell, and weapon animations, to dynamic time of day and weather effects.

Seeing the game in action, the effect is immediate—this is the game millions have loved for almost two decades, in truly modern form. If you're a longtime fan, everything you know and love is intact, and if you've never played, this is the perfect place to begin.

It also adds new quality of life improvements to the original game, including:
  • HUD, menu and map reworks
  • Improved UI for systems like Persuasion, Clairvoyance, and more
  • Modifications to levelling, encumbrance, non-combat perks, and other mechanics
  • Improved enemy scaling
  • Enhanced accessibility features
  • Additional autosaves
  • Revised first-person and third-person camera
  • Much more...

Oblivion Remastered Deluxe Edition
Available for purchase separately, or as an upgrade to the base game, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Deluxe Edition includes all of the above, and adds:
  • Bonus quests
  • Unique weapon sets
  • Unique armor sets
  • Unique horse armor sets
  • Digital artbook
  • Official soundtrack

I'm as excited as you are to say that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is out today—return to a true classic on Xbox Series X|S, PC (via Steam and the Xbox App for Windows PC), cloud, and PlayStation 5. It's available day one with Game Pass, and is an Xbox Play Anywhere title.

Oblivion didn't quite hit for me in the same way Skyrim did, so I don't think I've ever returned to it since my original playthrough. But if they're going to put it on gamepass then sure, why not.

I wonder if they actually changed the facial animations for NPCs that you talk to - they all had a creepy look, specifically the human NPCs. It was very off putting when you got the zoomed in focus of their face as you talked to them and made decisions. I hated how they looked.

And I wonder if they changed the character generation menu. I never figured out how to make a character that looks vaguely humanoid without pressing the random button and not touching anything else.

Unfortunately, it suffers from serious performance issues, much like 90% of the titles running on Unreal Engine 5. Sad story...

I ain't gonna give 50 British hash browns for a remake anyway (60 for the premium edition with... drum roll... horse armor). Hopefully, it'll get fixed by the time it goes on a discount. Fingers crossed.

I'm playing it right now on Game Pass.
The character creation is about the same so you can make the same mutants again. 'I'm playing a female Nord and after spending ~15 mins with the creation menu she looks alright to me for a non modded character at least tho I always play with the first person mode in the Elder Scroll games so its like eh whatever'

Tbh for the usual UE 5 stuff this doesn't even run that bad imo.
On my rig I can push around 60 +/- FPS outside and more inside dungeons/buildings.
Thats with High settings and High Software Lumen enabled + DLSS on Quality which is totally fine with me. I assume that it could be lower later on in the game maybe in the Oblivion realm areas but still this is not a fast paced game anyway.

Funnily, the more time I spent in the character generation menu, the worse my character got. It was either the default option or nothing for me. :D

I hope this got changed, or at least tweaked.

It's a complete remake, so technically not a 20 year old game.
No new stories, no new locations, no new characters. Yes, it's a 20 year old game.

What I usually do in these games is that I only apply modifications to the default preset model to my liking like some minor changes and then call it a day otherwise I would also end up with a monstrosity. 'In my original Oblivion playthrough I was using a modded character and the same in Skyrim when I've played it for the second time'

I'm actually wondering if modding will be a thing in this version or not.

Only when you're on max settings and enable Lumen too.
1745367401620.png

I just got out of the sewers and I'm getting around 87 FPS at 2160p. If I look toward the Imperial City Palace it jumps to 100+. Everything on max except for these:

I'll switch over to the RX 9070 XT later to test. I'm currently on the RTX 5090.

Also, the game seems to run fine on the Steam Deck. 30 FPS through and through, but you need to give it its max 15W TDP. Not sure how it is on the Claw 8 AI+ yet.

You forgot that 80~90 is about to become the new normal for new AAA games :D

Is Hardware lumens that bad performance wise ?
high software lumen

All other settings maxed with a 4090 the game ships with an old version of DLSS takes about 5 seconds to upgrade it to transformer.

Oh yeah, I forgot to do that. I wonder how much of an improvement it is to upgrade to the latest version with DLSS set to Quality.

It looks better to me but that is always subjective

DLAA and transformer Quality look the same to me in this game.

what about inside or area lit by ambient lighting ?

like 20-30fps higher either way at least for me the outdoor areas are way more demanding.
