Samsung FPXD to Bring 3,072 x 3,072 Screen Resolutions

Samsung announced today that it has a new display that can run at resolutions of up to 3072 x 3072. This display is a flat panel X-ray detector (FPXD) for use in X-ray machines. The uses for the display extend well beyond medical purposes according to Samsung. As games and graphics hardware continue to advance, the old 2560 x 1600 resolution is becoming obsolete to hard-core avid gamers. This new monitor will allow gamers to take their game to the next level with ultra high-resolution graphics. Aside from gaming, Samsung also envisions the FPXD display being used in traditional X-ray systems, CAT scan machines, for building inspections and in airport security systems.

rofl, I use 1440x900 and am happy with that...I have gamed at 1600x1200 when I had a 19" crt...but really, I don't need the highest resolution possible. I wouldn't mind seeing a sweet game with all the eye candy at 3kx3k, but the expense of support and that ability will be kinda rediculous for a while IMO.

I'm happy at the resolutions i play at, but I'm sure there are plenty that will take this very seriously for their gaming rigs and that's cool. Gotta love this industry!

No regular DirectX card is going to be able to drive that monster. So not only will it be a crazy expensive monitor, you'll need a fortune to buy the bespoke engineering sample GPU to drive it.

JUST BRING US 2560 x 1600 resolution at 21". We want super hi def. 180dpi so that we can FINALLY read PDFs one page at a time!

Really? How can 2560x1600 become obsolete when there isn't anything (that I am aware of) that will do higher resolutions, unless you are talking about multiple monitors?

I am very happy with 2560x1600.

I don't think a higher resolution would help THAT much for games and similar applications. I'd much prefer bigger physical size. I actually considered getting an HDTV to hook my gaming rig up to instead of getting a bigger monitor that I'd have to turn the resolution down anyways.

Now a large resolution does help with multitasking and I'm sure other applications as well. Imagine having 10 webpages open side by side.

1920x1080 is high def
2560x1600 is full def
30??x???? = ultra high def

Then again... if i cant game at that res, who cares if the card cant support it. We are certainly a few years away from watching movies at that res, let alone gaming.

AFAIK

1280x720 = 720p hi def
1920x1080 = 1080p "true" hi def

haven't heard of the 30" resolution being "full" hi def before as it's only integrated into computer monitors and not TVs.

Hey you gotta plant the seed somewheres and this x-ray device is just the start, People are only now just barely getting 30" LCD monitors with 2560x1440 nowadays. And even that is still a very niche market that won't reach its full potential until at least 2010, when prices are decent enough to buy them, by then We may start seeing these 3000 resolution monitors start rolling out at the high end. But even that is not a sure fact.

I have to argue that gamers wouldn't use the resolutions before TVs. Most gamers wont, but there will be those that "require" it. This could also be a start for reqs on DX11 and DX11 capable video cards.

Things are taking turns changing so fast (CPUs speed early 2000's, CPUs architecture late 2000's, storage late 2000's) that it may be videos turn next to take the leap.
I agree medical and probably government will eat these up and allow Samsung the funding needed to finalize it. It won’t take long for the tech communities desires to follow.
