AMD to Bring Back K8 Architecture

AMD feels that the K8 architecture still has a little life in it. While Intel is working hard on 45-nm and Quad Core platforms that will cost quite a pretty penny, AMD is working on cost-effective and energy efficient solutions for the dudes that don't need or can't afford 1.21 gigawatts of processing power. To create said solutions, AMD is going to revert to an old favorite: the tried-and-true K8 architecture. After putting the K8 series through a die shrink, AMD plans to bring 11 65nm K8 CPUs to market, under the code-name Brisbane. The new 65nm variants of the K8 architecture will more likely than not require very little power to run, and will even more likely be clocked at high speeds. AMD is putting a large focus on energy efficiency, as the majority of current confirmed CPU models are flagged "Energy Efficient". All of the new 65nm K8 chips will be socket AM2, and will work in an AM2+ motherboard.

Smart move regarding the fact that the Brisbane core is still AMD´s latest release of a 100% correctly working and fully compatible CPU. :toast:

Yeah, but that´s their best possible call atm.
It´s not about XXnm, it´s about PERFORMANCE.
Finally some guys over AMD managed to face reality...

Uhh... this is news? Brisbanes have been out for a year. Even if they can increase the speeds of the chips, it can't compete with what Intel has to offer. It seems they are going to become VIA, and just produce low-watt parts that have low-performance. This just might be the beginning of the end for AMD...

That is why i'm not upgrading my system until Summer 08. Then the B3 revision should be out and hitting much higher clock speeds. My current system with videocard upgrades will hold me over till then.

And for the other post, I would love to see them release a faster socket 939 chip than the FX-60 but chances are that won't happen.

It is more likely that they will require very little power than it is that they will require a lot of power.
To write it a different way.. There is a greater chance that these will use very little power than the chance that they won't.

Anyways..

I think its all they have, better to admit it and restructure now or they will be Via. One big difference is most people don't need quads yet and x2 has some market left.

Hell they will sell good anywhere. You guys forget that in the dual core market the x2's are still very competitive. Not so much with us overclocking enthusiasts, but in the boxed system arena.

i congratulate amd on this, they found that phenoms flopped in their face, and so while going back to the drawing board for phenoms, they are also improving older cpu's, for people that dont need uber cpu's.

now if only microsoft was to release that vista was a huge flop in their face, half the pirating as xp? im not suprised, no one wants vista, not even pirates. if only they'd make xp better while taking vista back to the drawing board..

So a problem unexpectedly popped up, they put a fix for it and now it flopped? nice usage of words there. I cant believe all the negativity AMD gets for not producing the "UBER" intel killer chip and what not. Same thing was said about INtel a few years back. Yall need to get off your soap boxes and encourage innovation, not trounce it. I guess youd be happy with Intel being the king and then those nice little 150 to 200 procs they got going back up?

Who knows, AMD might find a way to clock up the 65nm chips and still make some money. This is exactly the same as the P4 situation, but hopefully through price AMD can still make it a win. The 5000+ black was by far a home run in the enthusiast realm. Hopefully they can restructure the k8 design to improve clock speeds, power consumption, or some other tangible performance benefit.
