AMD RS780 Chipset to Launch in January

Information coming from DigiTimes, claims that AMD will launch its next-generation performance/mainstream RS780 IGP and value RS740 chipsets in January next year, while in the second quarter, the company will launch the high-end RS780D and mainstream RS780C. RS780 motherboards will be priced around US$90-120, while RS740 motherboards will come for around US$40-60. The RS780 supports AM2+ processors, HyperTransport 3.0 and PCI Express 2.0, while the IGP will support DirectX 10 and UVD (Unified Video Decoder) 2.0 for H.264 and VC-1 decoding. The IGP also supports DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI and HDCP. Hybrid CrossFireX technology, which is a similar to NVIDIA's Hybrid SLI, allowing the IGP to work together with discrete graphics cards for extra performance, will be presented as well.

Good, those 790FX boards are way too expensive for the common folk. This should certainly help with the adoption of the AM2+ capable processors. Much more friendly, and in my price range.

Thats a good price. So this will not support AM2+ like its big brother? Will it support all other features like UVD?

I'm thinking the 740 would be a derivative of the 780, so a couple less features on the board to cut back in price, but the main features of the new chipset should be present, i.e. AM2+, HT3, PCIe 2.0. If they cut out the IGP for the cheaper boards, then away goes all the video related functions, which I would be okay with personally, as I'm not one to rely on an IGP anyways.

I'll need to see some numbers on the Hybrid X-Fire before it gets any consideration though, I can't imagine the performance benefit would warrant a 50-60$ premium.

Id like to see what the 780X and 780 normal come with and their prices. I like the 790FX boards (all varieties) but they are a tad bit high.

They're not expensive. Gigabyte has done some very filthy pricing here, like a 2x PCIeX16 board based on the 790FX for $220. While MSI and ASUS both offer 4x PCIeX16 (x8,x8,x8,x8) for roughly $170.

ECS makes a 770 based board for $65.

So in each segment, barring those from Gigabyte, all boards are appropriately priced.
