Intel was originally going to launch the X48 chipset in January next year, however the company may postpone the chipset launch by 1-2 months because of the large volume of X38 chipsets. Motherboard makers fear that the X48 chipset will slow down clearance of its X38 chipset inventory and have negotiated with Intel to delay the launch of its X48 chipset. The story also says that motherboard makers have already received X48 A1 test samples from Intel.

So its worth waiting then basically rather than buying a x38 board now.

Nah, I'd say the opposite. If x48 was coming out in Jan/Feb, I'd say might as well wait. If its going to be Q2, you might as well get the x38 now, as a few sites(anand is one) have been saying x48 is not that impressive compared to x38 boards.

Edit: Link to Anand article. It's an early first look, so don't take it as gospel, but I wouldnt put all upgrade plans on hold for x48.

Id say it is time to get AMD. This is a great way for Intel to combat the announcement of a AMD price cut by putting back a new product release so they can retain the price on an older product.

The thing is,the delay is only to give shops a chance to clear stocks of x38,so x48 mite be great and worth waiting for.Specially if you have a half decent machine now anyway.

Oh, I agree. But if you NEED an upgrade, there is no point in waiting, as there will always be something new coming. The power users/deep pockets/those who sell last gen parts wont care though. They will upgrade to the latest no matter when it comes out. They will go from P35/x38 to x48 and then again to Nehalam this time next year with a new socket (probably) and DDR3 only support (probably) that comes with it. For the average person, as they say, if you wait for the next best thing, you'll just keep waiting and never upgrade.

I had considered getting an X38 board after the X48s came out as I figured there would be a price drop. Now with AMD cutting prices on the Phenoms I may have to look at some of the ATI chipset boards again(which makes me happy as I miss them)
