WidowPC Launches 8800M GTX Notebook

Relatively unknown computer manufacturer WidowPC has become one of the first companies to launch a notebook equipped with NVIDIA's 8800M GTX graphics processor. The Sting 517D2 features up to a 17" 1920x1200 screen, a 512MB 8800M GTX GPU, an Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 processor running at 2.4GHz, 4GB DDR2 memory and an MTRON 32GB SSD hard drive - quite an impressive combination. The downside is that you will have to pay at least $4,744 for those specs (chuck in a couple of extras like a DVD burner and Vista Ultimate and you'll be getting on for $5,000), but if you want the best portable graphics money can buy, this is the notebook for you.

Sweet, but thinking about what 5 grand could buy you in a pc, suddenly this laptop doesn't seem so attractive anymore. personally I think that laptops should be optimized for portability and battery life.

I think it's all dependant. If you're a person tha's going to either your mate's house, or to a lot of LAN parties, a gaming laptop ends up being a very good altrnative, since you're always got power at those places, and then you've also got a powerful laptop for gaming, and didn't have to lug about a large tower case ad a big ass monitor, with keyboard mouse, and a few cables. With a good gaming laptop, you just shove everything into a backpack of messenger bag, and you're off. Sure, it's heavy, expensive and battery life is poor to non-existent, but everything has its consequences.
I decided to spend £600 on a more portable laptop rather than a gaming one, so I would had less trouble carrying it aut on campus, and although it plays WoW well enough at its native res, it's got to be on all low settings, and even then, I just about survive in built-up areas and large, highly populated towns. I also paid a premium for it being a 13" portable laptop, but it's less than 2KG (or about 2KG), and has upto 3 hours battery life from a 4-cell battery, and I it no matter whats.

Still, if I had the money, I'd rather buy a good spec laptop like this, instead of a desktop machine, I've been playing at a friend's house quite a lot recently, so I do see the advantage of a good spec laptop. My mate does too, he has a mid-spec psuedo-gaming laptop, and he's going back and forth between England and Holland, so having a desktop would mean he'd have to make do with a rappy internet cafe, or something.

gaming laptops are also great for if your stuck at airports for hours on end If you can get good use out of them thier worth it.. me I dont travel that much so I wouldnt make good use of having one.. I'm better off with a desktop gaming rig.

Edit: Jimmy, you forgot to mention its 32GB Solid State Hard Drive.. that must be pretty nice. I wonder if its a good SSC Drive..

The DS wont let you play CSS or any other computer games.. I dont think people want to carry around a bunch of electronics on the plane/airport, even if thier small ones.. its a pain to keep organised.

main thing, what if your not a DS gamer and you prefer Computer games


Edit: Ofc the price on this is high but thier are plenty of people who would buy it and plenty who can really take advantage of a laptop like this. personally since Im not "set" in life or have a real need for this, I would just get myself a psp for the road with a couple 4gb Sony memory sticks.
