NEC Also Working on Curved Monitor

Looks like Alienware isn't the only company with a curved monitor in the works. NEC has now announced its own 42" curved display, which will feature a resolution of 2880x900 pixels and a response time of under 0.02ms - pretty much identical to the Alienware specs, although an NEC spokeswoman said the two "have nothing to do with each other." NEC's offering will have a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and uses LED-backlit DLP rear projection, just like the Alienware one. As you can see, there are clearly visible seams, although these should be gone when the display goes on sale.

Love NEC for their monitors. Unfortunately, you gotta pay a premium over the other brands (but maybe not so much in this case since Alienware will be their only competitor, for now)

i think its the other way around Alienware prob worked out a deal with nec to re brand it as they do with alot of there "AlienWare" stuff

I reckon that would be a bargain.

Normal 42" DLP monitors would cost over $1,000, and I'm not sure if they use the new LED technology even. And even a standard 40" LCD TV is going to set you back over $500, so adding a curve will probably take it nearer to $2,000 I expect.

All I know is I want one of these curved monitors.

Face it a good monitor will last years, while everything else will be updated again and again.

I could see myself using one of these(if I got one)for 5 years or more.

I got me an HD 24" montor and i wold LOVE one of these. just imagine this combined with the latest ATI x2 varient.man my display rox, but this looks fantastic, however, i forsee FOV issues with games that dont nativly support widescreen

Is it just me, or would the "wraparound" effect be useless/confusing unless the graphics were actually coded to be displayed in that fashion. Otherwise you'd get more of a "fishbowl" effect. Kinda like when you hack the FOV on no-widescreen games.

I'm not taking issue with the res, just how the wraparound/peripheral is handled. Take a driving game, as shown, as an example. Normally, they would create the effect of the sides of the road going by FOR a flat screen. Now curve that screen and the effect is overpronounced.

It would make me nauseated! :ohwell:

I agree with my man...Already planned on going to a 24 incher.....but.....if this things around 1100 or 1200, I will most likely be clearing off my dsk to make more room! lol

i don't know it looks pretty f-ing cool to me. I don't suffer from those looking at TV sickness that some people get,

NOTE:Cameras pick up the screen changes better than the naked eye would. Take a pic of your TV, it will not look like when your looking at it at all.

I'm pretty sure they would work out the "effect" to make sure it is optically correct....I would hope so anyway...wouldn't make sense to produce such a screen only to have it not sell because the view wasn't playable...we shall see.

at $1000 USD you are looking at a damn good deal. LED HD Display is damn expensive. Id like to see it get past the 900 though. Id like it to be true hd. With that big of a display, and using DLP technology, it should be feasible. Oh, you can find a damn good 42" DLP LCD or regular DLP tv for under a grand.

it looks like 3x19" placed together. i assume that if you set a res of say, 1280x1024 then the two side panels would just turn off (either automatically, or via a setting)
