Available as a free automatic download later this month, the new software announced today lets movie fans rent movies on the iTunes Store directly from their widescreen TV. With iTunes Movie Rentals and Apple TV - and with no computer required-customers can effortlessly rent movies just by clicking a button on their remote. By the end of February, they'll be able to choose from a catalog of more than 1,000 titles, including over 100 titles in high definition video with 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound. DVD-quality iTunes Movie Rentals cost just $2.99 for library titles and $3.99 for new releases. High-definition versions are just one dollar more with library titles at $3.99 and new releases at $4.99.

Nope, it's still around. It was taken up very slowly by people, but actually, after it was hacked to run other OS, it became very useful. There's a UK based company that has Mac Mini and AppleTV based servers to rent out. They're not too powerful, but enough for a simple website.
I think the AppleTV is quite nice, they just didn't really make much of it. It's a bit like the iPhone, nice to look at, nice initiative, but it's flawed, needs work to be really truly usable.

To tell you the truth I have never seen one for sale anywhere.

You forgot to mention they are just slightly expensive, like all things Apple:D

The Apple TV being mentioned here just recently came out, and isn't dieing a slow death at all. It's a premium product, such as the iPhone. With such a hefty price tag it had before, it is only expected to gain a small percent of the market. It's good news that the price has lowered now. :toast:

Apple TV reminds me of Xbox Live.

Somewhat similar, except Apple TV has the ability to store and stream movies from your Mac or PC iTunes library. It also has the ability to store and stream songs from your iTunes library. Now with all of the movie companies signing on with Apple for movie rentals, the Apple TV will begin to gain even more market share. Blu-Ray HD movie rentals and purchases will also be a high possiblity in the coming future (all the rumurs of Apple about to go Blu-Ray exclusively).

I can do all that with my 360 or ps3.

Still nothing new. Anything I can watch on my computers, I can watch on my consoles.
