The first 45nm 3.0GHz Core 2 Extreme QX9650 CPU is set to undergo a few updates as Intel is preparing a new stepping for later this quarter. Planned to be available from March 3rd on, the C1 stepping CPUs will feature new SSPEC and MM numbers and a new CPUID - 0x00010677. The rest of the specifications of the C1 stepping remain unchanged from C0, but motherboard makers will still have to release new BIOS versions in order to support it.

Looks like Intel plans to stay on top in the high-end section of the competition. If AMD were to put something out there that was close to performance of Intel's beast, it would drive that dam price down low enough for me to buy one :p

Will they be making the same changes to the Q9300 and Q9450?

I don't actually know what stepping they currently use.

QUESTION: What happens if you install one of these CPUs into an "old" BIOS? Does it not recognise the CPU properly, give a polite error message, but works, possibly at the wrong voltage? OR does it BOMB OUT and the computer wont boot?

hard to say - it might not recognize the CPU and subsequently not boot, might not recognize it and issue a polite message and boot, or it may recognize it as the original stepping. I'd say it depends on the motherboard / bios

it's being updated because, I bet because the Q9450 will out perform the current Q9650 when overclocked (or come very close)and I bet the new Q9650's chips will be even better binned than the first Q9650 and will overclock even higher to keep them as the top dogs.

Yep, I have a feeling your right. Cannibalization of their other products in other words.
