Sometimes, photographs are taken with absolutely no recollection of exactly where they happened. Thankfully, Sony realized this common problem, and decided to do something about it. Using a process that Sony calls "GPS Tagging", the little device phones home once every 15 minutes, allowing you to effectively track yourself. You can also hook it up to your compatible Sony camera/camcorder to embed your location/the time into your pictures and videos. With 31MB of memory, it can store your trail for up to one month before needing to be emptied. It runs off of your ordinary AA batteries, which Sony claims gives it ten hours of life between charges. It should become available next month for roughly $150USD.

I don't know if they use this already but the government could probably put these things on people that are on parole. Can't imagine any other situation where the person would knowingly put this on themselves, though.

Did you guys read what zek posted? Its a gps tracking system for personal use. This can come in hand if you are going outdoors. Or as the news post says, for photographers to tag where their shots have been taken.

I've actually made a device similar to this for my dissertation, only works with my phone atm but whenever you take a photo is gets the gps data ad attaches this to the photo, then when you get home you transfer the images to a table interface and they are plotted on a map

When you think about it. This device really aint a bad idea.
Think of your professional photographers.

Theyre always on the go, snapping thousands of photos an outing (if your anything like me and Im not even interested in photography lol). Its good to know where all your photos are taken in case you find a good set of photos and want to return to that specific spot to take advantage of the good architecture/lighting or whatever made that photograph special.

It would probably also make building portfolios of photos much easier.

why only 31mb of memory tho? i can see the practicality thats convayed but this product but couldnt it have more storage, i bet they'll release some on-the-go data dumping accessorie for it (ie, the digimate for cameras) instead of putting larger capacities into the acutal product, for professionals who wont want ot have to xfer data frequently i doubt this has enough storage

Only 31MB because the info is likely stored in a text-like format, and therefore doesn't consume much storage space. Like they said, 31MB is good for a month of tracking before you have to dump it.

still, if i had a use for this product id much prefer to be able to choose to be lazy and only have to empty it in say 6months, not having to in only one just to be able to keep using it

i guess it could be used if you go hiking or fishing so you know where that big fish was, maybe to have a log of where you have been for work (delivery driver) ?
