Microsoft's PR team sent out this statement regarding the recent developments in the HD DVD camp and rumors that there will be a Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on drive in the near future:
We do not believe the recent reports about HD DVD will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. As we've long stated, we believe it is games that sell consoles and Xbox 360 continues to have the largest next-gen games library with the most exclusives and best selling games in the industry. We will wait until we hear from Toshiba before announcing any specific plans around the Xbox 360 HD DVD player. HD DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room along with playback of the DVD movies they already own.

That or just a BD drive to go along with the HD drive. We will just have to wait and see what Microsoft will do.

Foxnews.com (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,331150,00.html) just posted that Toshiba has called it quits for HD DVD....seems everyone is jumping off the sinking ship and trying to minimize their losses.

Why should Microsoft care whether HD-DVDs sells well it has little impact on their console sales or their game sales. I've yet to see an X-box gamer say "actually I'm not going to buy Gears of War because its on HD-DVD and Blue Ray is winning" because the games sales should be treated independent to movie sales and shouldn't influence whether a game is purchased. You don't hear Nintendo worrying that Toshiba and other big companies are uninterested in their mini disc so why should Microsoft care if Toshiba is uninterested in HD-DVDs. This is all propaganda to fuel a format war which Microsoft care little about because their games will sell regardless due to them being in the gaming business not movie business.

for media purposes only. Many people are using the PS3/360 for media centers, and if one has a 'lost' format, that one will no longer suit that task.

Both Darren and Microsoft are correct. Whether it's HD-DVD or BluRay as the winner doesn't matter. The industry has begun moving away from physical media and is now in the process of digital distribution. Netflix is rumored to be offering it's services to both Microsoft and Sony.

The thing that hurts Microsoft most is not whether BluRay wins but the unreliability of it's Xbox360 console.

Shut it the xbox 360 has a wide selection of games that run at good speeds and look great.
So what get pc or a dvd player to play your media simple.
Xbox 360 isnt a bad console and certainly the ps3 isnt "superior" both have pluses and minuses and for one i prefer the xbox 360 mines hasnt broken yet and i hardly notice the heat yes it is noisy but sometimes if im on the pc or the volume of the game seems to cover up the small noise.

Microsoft noticed that the 360 had a problem and corrected it and if yours has a problem they are happy to fix it :rockout:

One more thing the wide choice of games is what brings me to like the 360 i mean it has exclusives like Gears of War and Forza 2.

Seriously guys get it in ur skull the ps3 is trying to compete with pcs not console, it has keyboard and mouse support and linux and media capability.
Forcing you to have blu ray rather than the choice is what makes blu ray more used.

I agree that the 360 is a great console and that the PS3 and the 360 both have its pluses and minuses.
The problem I have is that the Xbox360 does NOT have many exclusives anymore.
Now you may list Gears of War and other games like that.
But these are not exclusives since they are also on the PC.
An exclusive is a game that is ONLY on that system and the PC is a second system.
That is my main reason for not getting a 360 (besides the failure rate).
Why spend another $300+ on another console when its going to come out for the PC anyways.

I can't help but feel a little sorry for those people who have gone out and bought standalown HDDVD players, knowing now that very shortly there will be little or no movies supporting the format however I suppose the one small consolation is that you can still play standard DVD's on them and they will "upscale" to better resolutions.

anyways.

I agree, why spend money on an Xbox or any console, when the majority of them are coming to the PC. But you have to bare in mind that many of the exclusive games such as Halo and Gears of War take up to a year to arrive on the PC, so you have to the prepared to wait for Microsoft or Sony or the games developers to break their exclusivity rule and it's not always guaranteed.

with the amount of money that MS makes on other products i doubt the loss of a HD is going to make much of a dent in total earnings

Michael Bay thought MS was just pushing for HD DVD to get a huge war going so that in the end, it was all about digital downloads, which would make them even more money <G>
