Universal Studios to Begin Putting Titles on Blu-ray

The HD-DVD camp put up the white flag just a few days ago. Now what? Universal Studios has an answer to that question: everyone goes Blu-ray. They're very happy to begin that movement. As of now, everything coming out of Universal Studios' doors will be in Blu-ray, if it's in high-def.

While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray. The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear. Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for high-def's unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate

I never thought you were wrong. All I wanted was for the consumer to decide which the consumer did not. Now we will see what happens to the prices since BR is exclusive. Will they go up or down? Sony has a lot of money to recoup from paying the studios.

While you are technically right, the percentage of HD movie sales is so low, neither format makes a dent in the market. So not enough consumers have bought HD at all to base a decision off of it. But by the same token, it's been speculated that the whole reason HD has such a low market penetration, is because of the confusion caused by the format war. In short, something had to be done.

I personally think this whole war took place just so MS could try to get a shot at putting a dent in Sony's back account. In my opinion, sales of the PS3 are going to rise 10% on this whole deal and back fire on MS. MS is going to be stuggling to keep up with the PS3 sales this year, while the Blu-Ray owner base continues to increase every sell.
