AMD Slashes Radeon HD 3850 and HD 3870 512MB Card Prices

Just one day before the release of the GeForce 9600 GT, AMD has decided to cut the prices of the Radeon HD 3850 and HD 3870 512MB versions. The price cuts will first be felt in the US followed by the rest of the world and will see the HD 3870 go from $244 to $189 and the 512MB HD 3850 from $199 to $169. Earlier today Advanced Micro Devices also pointed out that AMD offers better performance with its HD 3870 Series, compared to GeForce 9600 GT, based on the preliminary benchmark results posted on the net. After tomorrow we'll see about that for real.

Nope there still 450$. Two GDDR4 3870's seem like the cheapest way to get great performance right now

but, AMD will prob lower the price on the x2s as we near the release of the GX2 - depends on how threatened AMD feels over it.


I hope this price cut in response to the 9600GT stays, though - I'm thinking of buying 2 3870s in the next few months if the price is right . . . we'll see . ..

According to W1zz's review 3850 comes close to 3870. With this price drop and difference of $20 no justification to buy 3850. 3870

I wouldn't worry about it, think about how long the 3850 and 3870 were selling at higher prices due to no competition in that bracket. They've made tons of loot and are just now needing to drop prices to keep ahead. I think they're gonna be just fine.

i dont think that dropping the price will hurt them they already stated that when they finished the 3800 series that the manufacturing costs were drastically slashed in comparison to the 2900s so i believe that they are doing just fine remember that their x2s are still 449 so not so bad after all... i believe that DAAMIT is just doing this cut to make way for their up comig release...in a couple of months this just opens up the price bracket a little more for them...
they have also stated that the r770 is vastly superior to the 670 so their next gen should be great...just hope they fix the damn AA issues... i think ati has something up their sleeves..

also take into consideration that when the 3800 series launched nvidia had rushed to get the gt out to kill ati's shine...this may very well be a little payback. all is fair in love and video cards.

Im glad they are dropping the prices, but surely the HD 3850 and HD 3870 justify a better competition than the 9600 GT (though I can see that for the 3850 maybe)

Don't the 3850's and 3870's have the same core/die? All's I know is I like my 512mb 3850.

They do. From everything I've seen, your 512mb 3850 is the best deal for your money right now, hands down.

Actually they made no loot, they are already selling at a loss, well in fact, that might not be true ......I'll re-phrase it, the company are still operating at a loss, this will widen that loss I would guess, but if it shifts customer base from Nvidia to ATi, they will be hoping that with the right products on the market in the future, they will keep some of those additional customers through loyality which will help their longerterm objectives.

Well, based on the proliferation of bios tweaks and voltmods floating around for the 38's, I foresee them being a tweaker's playtoy for a while still.

Especially after those price cuts.

I just hope those price cuts don't take too long to get to my backwater.
