When Quadfire with the 3870x2's is availabe, I'm sure they'll beat that (although not sure they'll get the cores/mem that high on the x2's).

Well im sure they get that ish free just for testing purposes anyways. 5.8 is quite impressive and surprised the 2900xt's are still holding their own for benchmarking.

I don't quite get why 2900xts still hold the title. I mean, if they threw a couple of x2s or 8800 ultras in there, should it not theoretically destroy the 2 2900s?

They use 2900xt because it can score better in 3d mark. Not in real world gaming though. I don't think 3870x2 crossfire can get the same score as 2900xt crossfire. Oh yeah, look at the drivers they are using, those drivers are optimized drivers for crosfire for the 2900xt.

Alas it had to be a pair of Radeon HD2900 to make that epic feat, I knew the R600 packed lot of meat. :toast:

The reason they use 2900's, as has been said, is because of the 512-bit bus which is needed when memory bandwidth becomes a bottleneck at high core frequencies.

Remember some years ago when they started 'extreme' projects to get a processor to 7ghz or 8ghz so they could claim a world record?

Ya...won't be long it seems till every LN2 tester is going to be reaching that point.

Shame about the sub-standard GPU power in these tests. It's obvious the CPUs are making the difference. It's going to be wild when someone runs the new (real new, not GX2) Nvidia cards in Tri-Sli with a Nehalem chip.

what in the world makes everyone think that 3870s are better than 2900s? 3870's are on a smaller process, yeah, but they dont overclock as well, and also they are missing transistors [? im not sure what impact that exactly seems to have], i know that my 2900 XT 1gb gddr4 beats my friends 3870 per clock by a very small margin in 3dmark06... good question tho, why can the 2900 XT overclock past the 3870?

lol, yeahh it is, but think about the heat they're putting out. The cards (I'm assuming there b/c of the high clocks) and the quad cpu....that's alot of heat.

No heat, the CPU and GPU's will be around -15 on LN2, thing is, most of these teams are given their kit, I mean a decent LN2 kit is serious cash in itslef, far more than the QX9650 let alone the gfx etc, just look at their PSU, you could buy both of those 2900XT's with what that PSU cost.

Having said that, there is still a terrific amount of work and preparation that goes into this stuff but what would impress me even more is if a private user acheived these kind of scores on their own kit purchased by themselves, but fair play to Team Italy.

lol yeah, I meant like heat as in how much energy they put out, not as in they're hot. That's why they need so much LN2, cause the cpu alone is putting out probably like 200-300 watts of heat.
