AMD Plans to Add Radeon HD 3830 ?

DigiTimes, citing unnamed industry sources claims that somewhere between April and May, we should expect ATI to launch new Radeon HD 3830 graphics card. The 3830 will have 128-bit memory interface, 320 stream processing units, 16 texture filtering units and 16 ROPs, and will support memory capacities of up to 256MB. The card will be positioned between AMD's Radeon HD 3850 and HD 3650 and will target the gap between NVIDIA's GeForce 9600GT and 8600GTS with a price lower than US$129. The release of Radeon HD 3830 may also lead to price reduction of several other members of the HD 3 series, the Radeon HD 3870 and HD 3850. AMD didn't comment on the story.

Great, as long as they don't raise the price of the 3850, considering you can get those for about $150 now.

considering the new ati price list posted here a day or two ago the 3850 will really be pointless, with this at $130 and the 3870 at $160. Great to see ATI putting up such a fight, to bad the AMD side is still pathetic.

For this card to really shine I think it should be under $100.
You can find 3850 for around $125 and then the 3870 for around $160.
A lot of options in the mid range

I think the AMD strategy is to announce the price today at $129... but on RELEASE, to put it into channels at $99. That way, its more of a pricing surprise for nvidia... and stores will have stock of the nVidia lines at a high price... meaning they wont be able to reduce prices for some time without taking a big hit.

TBH, wtf is 128-biut memory doing on a modern card. It really isnt saving them and manuf. costs. Its just crippling for crippling sake.

Using cheap RAM and lowering the clocks is understandable on a budget card, but R6xx on 128-bit is just silly.

Heh, somewhat stupid of a stradegy, putting a 128-bit memory bus on a card of the HD3850's caliber...

Jeesus, what's next, a HD3810 with a 64-bit memory bus AND 320 shaders? They could've put 240 shaders on the card instead, now it's a huge waste. :shadedshu

more like

seems more like the X1800 of the x1xxx cards just filling the price point rather then full blown gamers card
more power for the Htpc guys who also are lite games who like little more power then the 3650's

I think its a fine idea. But why 3830? Its only 128-bit...it should be a 37** card. IMO the naming scheme should be consistant. The second number (HD 3*00) should have the same bit rate and stream processors while the third number (HD30*0) should determine clocks.

It just confuses people as they are doing with this. Someone may *think* that because its a 38** card its top of the range, when really, its far off the HD3850.

AMD is beginning to canibalize their own lines... the 3850 already resides between the 9600 and the 8600. This card is a very bad idea.

Instead of a stiff memory bus, they should have drawn some inspiration from the HD2900 GT. Retained the 256-bit wide memory bus, had 240 SP's instead. It's not about performance, it's all about the numbers. People are laying emphasis on the memory bus width a lot these days which is funny because most don't even understand the macro picture that I can have a narrow bus but faster memory and end up with the same bandwidth. So, just to make the product sell better, they should have retained the 256-bit wide bus.

In this thread itself, a lot of people (who understand how things work) are like "omg 128bit wtf"...wonder how different the reactions would be if it were 240 SP's, 256-bit mem bus. How would people have reacted? I'd assume, a bit more positive.
