Microsoft Extends Sales of Windows XP Home for ULPCs Until 2010

Microsoft who once extended the life period of its Windows XP operating system is now going to do it again. The company originally planned to suspend the sale of Windows XP on June 30, 2008, but the big success of all low-cost notebook offerings is forcing Microsoft to further extend the life of XP. Microsoft will now make Windows XP Home available for ultra-low-cost PCs (ULPCs) until June 30, 2010 or one year after the release of the next version of Windows. Microsoft goes on to state that it "Heard from partners and customers that they want Windows broadly available for this new class of devices, because they want the familiarity, compatibility and support only available on the Windows platform." Microsoft also acknowledged that Windows XP makes more sense than Windows Vista for these machines adding, "While Windows Vista provides many benefits, including an easier and more secure user experience, Windows XP Home provides an effective solution on these devices from a performance and cost perspective." Unfortunately, only XP Home will get a reprieve from Microsoft.

I was hoping XP would become obsolete, and pulled off the shelves, and no more updates.

I prefer Vista over XP, and I want the schools to upgrade, cause XP drives me mad.

I'm not the least bit surprised. MS and builders are making decent money selling "down grades" to XP from Vista....

So, XP doesn't die after all. And, it's not hard to believe that the market favors XP over Vista in this situation. Also, XP is better for these laptops then Vista. Case closed!

I think that people trash vista who haven't used it because one thing:

They don't like vista, and they rate it low. People believe everything they read on the internet. So, without trying Vista, they'll just be like "Vista sucks"

I read reviews on Vista through CNET, and they seem very biased on things. And CNET is popular, so alot of people will catch those.

I've had that happen here at school. People who don't use Vista will tell me (the schools have the Vista Capable stickers) that Vista is terrible. I ask them if they ever used it. They say No, I read about it.

I think Microsoft do this because they don't want Linux to gather market share, and popularity!
Many cheap laptops lands in children's hand's and when they grow up without Windows in the early year's Microsoft goes Crazy!!!
ULPPCs don't have the power for Vista, but a slim XP version can roll on these notebooks!

i agree.

I used vista (untimate x86) for about 4 months, first month it was great, but then it just started to get really anoying (mainly vista alone using well over a gig of RAM) and the realisation hit me (vista is just a slower, bloated XP), so i got my trusty XP Pro disk out again and havn't looked back, and i WILL NOT be installing Vista again, not unless the performance issues and bugs are fully sorted, wich i highly dought, so i hope Windows 7 will make me think otherwise about Microsoft can still make a good OS.

This is great for xp users but one thing all these threads do is bring the nah nah xp/vista is better crowd to the surface and is about as productive as a fart in an elevator.

My wife has Vista Home on her laptop. Its cool and different, but to be honest, that damn WGA or whatever the hell its called (popup for security) is annoying. Seeing as I dont spend alot of time on it, I dont care to turn it off and she doesnt mind. ITs slow as hell to boot up and shes got a speedy laptop. Honestly XP would work better, but Vista is prettier, and she likes pretty

In a way, they already did that in 2006... Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs.

As to MS extending the life of XP... YAY!!! That means XP won't be obsolete until 2010 or 2011 now, lol. This announcement will make XP either their longest or second longest lived OS (depending on how you count MS-DOS). Now, let's hope Vista don't get this treatment in 2014...

Get her an old G3 iMac and slap OS X on it then... =P It'd still run faster than Vista does, which is pretty sad.
