NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT for Older Mac Pros Now Available

Apple and NVIDIA released a new graphics upgrade kit today. From now on all first-generation Mac Pro users can swap their old video card with NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT GPU for as much as $279. When Apple first released Mac Pro in January 2008, they offered the GeForce 8800 GT as an upgrade option, however due to firmware issues, the 8800 GT was not compatible with first Mac Pros - until today. "The computer is more visual than ever, and Mac users in particular demand an exceptional visual experience," said Ujesh Desai, general manager of GeForce desktop GPU business at NVIDIA. "Adding a GeForce 8800 GT to the first-generation Mac Pro system will deliver a major graphics boost, resulting in faster processing for a complete range of visual computing applications." North American customers can purchase the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT upgrade kit online from NVIDIA or the Apple Store for $279. Consumers outside of the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada should order from the Apple Store.

good news for boot camp users - sorry for stating the obvious & i might be wrong but Macs have never been good with graphics also because game support for macs are almost non existant

want decent graphics??? save the money from buying a mac & buy a mid range pc then buy a kick ass graphics card to go in it.....

this whole upgrade is a bit pointless.

Well, you can't win 'em all. If you want kickass graphics and top of the line hardware, buy a PC. If you want to look cool, buy a mac.

To be fair, games aren't on Apple's list of things to improve and add support for, so I'm not surprised they daudle about, and take their time with these launches, but tis certainly good to see gamers with Mac Pros for work reasons, get to play some games.

Oh, btw, since switching to Intel, there have been a flurry of games released. Plus, a large portion of the N4S series is on Mac; Valve is considering Mac support; BF2142 was released a while back for Mac; WoW and a huge chunk of Blizzard's games are on Macs; also, Tony Hawk is a Mac advocate, so it's a safe bet you'll see all of his games available for them; Colin McRae games have been released for Mac too, I think DiRT is out for it.
Certainly not an enormous library of games, but enough to pass the time.
