By sending an email message to every one of its subscribers, Microsoft today informed that it will add some drastic music restrictions to the MSN Music service. "I am writing to let you know that as of August 31, 2008, Microsoft will change the level of support to be offered for music purchased directly from MSN Music prior to November 14, 2006. As of August 31, 2008, we will no longer be able to support the retrieval of license keys for the songs you purchased from MSN Music or the authorization of additional computers. License keys already obtained as of August 31, 2008 will continue to allow you to listen to songs on all the computers that you previously authorized for service. We wanted to send out this notification well in advance to remind you to backup your music and to provide you sufficient time to confirm license keys for the songs you've purchased from MSN Music." the mail says. The music restrictions do not just apply to authorizing new computers. If you for example upgrade from one Microsoft OS to another, you'll need to reauthorize all tracks once you install the new Windows OS. Microsoft launched the MSN Music Store in September, 2004, in an effort to compete with Apple's iTunes but after two years on November 14, 2006 the company started redirecting MSN Music Store shoppers to the Zune Marketplace. Now Microsoft is taking the next step by deleting its MSN Music license servers.

LOL.... support? for music? Now you have to activate your music, just like windows basically?

Disposable music, godly. It's just a bunch of random noises with idiots saying stuff anyways (music). Who cares? It only takes 2 years for your favorite band to go to shit anyways.

Let this be a lesson to all of you trendy music downloaders.

Bill Gates strikes again!

The DRM benefit

This shit is hardly surprising. Here is another Charlie D rant on DRM. If only more reporters told it like it is:

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/04/22/ms-unashamedly-screws-music

MICROSOFT JUST SCREWED its music customers. In doing so, it proved what we have said all along, if you buy DRM'd anything, you are an idiot, Piracy is the Better Choice(R)(TM)(C).

The firm has arbitrarily decided that all the music you bought from it is now worthless because it can't be bothered to live up to its end of the bargain. It goes something like this, MS came up with a DRM infection and attached it to its music downloads. When the Zune came out, it decided it wanted a bigger piece of the pie, so it cut out all its partners.

DRM is making music purchase, and long term ownership, very complicated, and high risk. Seems like the "total cost of ownership" is much higher for downloaded DRM music, than buying plain old CDs.

Doesnt really curry good favour with customers... in fact... doesnt this just ENCOURAGE people to pirate? Since if you buy it... not only do you pay good money for the original download, you have the administrative burden of "re-authorising", plus the risk of NOT being able to reauthorise in the future. Basically, you get farked.

I bought music from MSN through WMP back in the day, and if I loose my key or change hardware I can no longer play it without reauthenticating. But the other option is to burn it, and re-rip it. Then it is DRM free. But what a pain in the ass, thanks MS for supporting my purchase.

not that i really care personaly, but i dont want to see anybody get banned for linking tools to remove DRM on video/audio stuff

yes i know about fairuse laws in the states BUT those laws are countered by the DMCA and there has yet to be a case showing if its leigal to make personal backups of digital media.

Honestly with Microsoft giving everyone the shaft on this one, I think it is absolutely warranted. Give em a break.

Bill Gates strikes again!

Bill Gates isnt in charge of Microsoft?
He officially retired at the beginning of this year.

And before that he was only working in a limited capacity, having announced his retirement like two years ago.

But Yes I agree. This is gayness.

Yes its me.
I starred in a 1977 film at about 30 years of age.

So that means im... a 61 year old who is currently courting a 16 year old collegue at my place of work - KFC :p. Ive somehow survived my lifetime on a minimum wage, and couldnt find more acting work after I was blown out of the sky by Darth Vader. Bastards.

Gates didnt do this yall, Gates Left has CEO in 2004 and gave MS to Steve Balmer, since then he has been working with MS in a support role. Want anyone to blame, blame Balmer, under Gates MS thrived and was loved, Gates stopped really being active in 2000 there abouts and Ballmer made most decisions.
