12 cores just seems rediculous, whats the point?

I myself am not condemning AMD so I dont understand your arguement. Im just saying everyone is groaning about the 20% better and all that crap. If you read what I said youd have seen that. anyways, enough of my semi hidden attempt at sticking up for AMD.

Seems everyone groaned about the GF9800 Line only giving a 30% boost to existing parts, and look what its doing, selling actually, Yall can groan all you want but when the evil inside (AMD) slams intel with their new line- the people will switch over, just like sheep.

You guys expecting an absolöt top-of-the-line chip to 'crush intel' are just silly.

IMO, I'll always take 70% of the performance of the top-end intel offerings, for 1/3 of the price (or less) from AMD. and guess what? My AutoCAD, photoshop, and all the games I play will run just fine, if not great.

If the L3 wasn't shit on barcelona they probably would be pretty close. More and ungimped cache on a quad could be very destructive to intel.

if i recall correctly Performance wise the AXP 6400+ was in the Neighborhood of the 6600 and the 6550, which the 6400+ has way less cache, so its very easy that Cache Level could of been increased to say 4MBs in the L2 Dept and 128 in the L1 and it would easily overthrow Intels at the same FSB and same cache levels.

Why are "common" people even worrying about this, it's NOT for you thus it seems stupid. These are for a market you have nothing to do with...anyone here actually using a server motherboard (besides those running servers...but then again really how big is yours?) or 2 processor boards?

I HIGHLY doubt that and system specs of course show that we're not. Why condemn a product that has nothing to do with you and is not aimed at you. Just because something makes the news it doesn't mean it's news for you...

I hate seeing things like this, same for the Intel crazy cores processors why are people even worrying about what they're doing unless you're actually in THAT very particular market. Crazy...just crazy

/common sense rant (though I guess there is no such thing as "common" sense anyway)

Right, let's talk commonsense. When Barcelona came out and benches proved it couldn't perform on par with competitive Xeon parts, it did send out signals that its desktop counterpart (Agena) wasn't going to be any better. Agena is just a desktop implementation of the same Barcelona (K10) architecture. Fast forward >> Phenom 9500, 9600, 9600 BE: bugged quads that couldn't OC much and performed worse than competition.

Now, if Shanghai's server CPU has a 20% increment over Barcelona, how much can we expect from its desktop adaptation? 50%? No, the same as with the sever parts. So, such news does affect common folk that would probably never buy server/workstation parts.

theres nothing wrong in a bit of analysis and opinion from computing enthusiasts. I dont own a ferrari or a porsche but as an automobile enthusiast i will damn well comment on my expectations on any of their new products. :pimp:

I really agree with this, but hopefully what will happen is ATI (graphics division) will break away and go forward from there on their own.

I can't believe people are disappointed with a 20% increase in performance. Lets put this in perspective, shall we? Lets say we have a 3GHz Shanghai. It would perform roughly equivalent to a 3.6GHz Barcelona. That puts it roughly in C2Q territory. Nothing to scoff at. Just as always, price will dictate it's success.

On a different note, who wants to bet Intel answers back with a triple die 6 core cpu? lol
